Lol yeah he is one of a few that posts his same problems in every thread from best color to running boards. He apparently did get a lemon though and he wants to make sure everyone knows. That forum, as big as it is, has less than 1% of Tacoma owners lol. You will never get a proper picture in that tiny sample. Especially since all are enthusiasts. As a matter of fact, right now the Tacoma has a 29 day average inventory time, one of the shortest of any vehicle. Toyota is ramping up production to produce an additional 60K Tacomas a year to meet the demand. That does not signal a bad quality vehicle with lots of problems.

Insert in front door handle fell out and hood release cable slipped out of the latch.

Kinda makes me wonder about other things like the motor, tranny, etc...

Anyone else have any other quality control or reliability issues??

Again, no. Expectations (need+want) drive demand. Demand drives supply and price. Econ101. And, price has no bearing on quality, reliability or durability. For example, the highest price 4Runner is around $45K. The highest priced Range Rover is around $135K. 3X the cost. Is it a higher quality, reliable or more durable? Nope. It does have a lot more features and options though. It also conveys a "status" that is not apparent with a 4Runner.

What blows me away is how some members equate a "40K" vehicle to an expensive vehicle. The AVERAGE price in2015 was 35K across all new vehicles sold here. Go price a JGC or an Explorer. Those things go way past the 4Runner. My wife's new Highlander went way past the 4Runner. Our expectations stayed the same as for any Toyota.

I think you're arguing a point I'm not making. Yes, markets dictate price based on supply and demand, but participants express preference through choice (i.e., market participation). When you make a choice you are excluding other choices, especially among substitutes (4R, JGC, LR). For me, the LR is not a feasible option, so I can't express any preference on that, but when I make a purchase/enter the market/make a transaction, I'm expressing preference (and expectation).

But to my point: no matter what my expectations are (I may not have bought a 4R for reliability, maybe I think it looks cool), I have higher expectations when I spend more money. And so do you. It can't be any simpler (it's really the simplest of math, which you probably do professionally much more than me). Only an irrational person would pay more for something they prefer less (expect less of).

Back on topic, the OP's post is the first time I have seen those issues. I did not search nor am I able to read every thread but my point is 1 occurrence is statistically meaningless in the quantities that most vehicles are sold in. Be it human or machine error, or even some freak incident involving the ships engine vibration and the sea breeze swaying the ship, odd and one off events happen. Don't take meaning where there is none

and I second or third, or fourth 48k for a 4runner! :shocked:

Its all relative and subjective I guess, also as suggested by the mixed responses and experiences. Yes, it is a huge leap (although not unreasonable one I believe) and no, I'm not too concerned. Simply trying to see if others had similar small shit fall off, break, etc. And, personally, I do expect more the more I pay weather its cars, watches, electronics, homes, etc. Thanks for the input.

I have had that drivers side door handle insert pop out on me a couple of times as well. I'm sure there is probably a better way to hold that in there, than friction, but what do I know. It's just one of those "huh..." things. I pop it back in and forget about it.

Haven't had any issues with the hood latch cable, but I've only been under there a few times for oil changes and to fill up washer fluid.

While these little things can be annoying, I've got to admit, they didn't suddenly cause me to doubt the reliability of my power train, but different people jump to different conclusions.

I also am a Tacoma owner and very active on the Tacoma world forum. I, along with most owners, have zero problems with our trucks. A very vocal minority over there scream at the top of their lungs every chance they get on their problems. I wrote a post on the perceived quality differences. I do not think the quality is worse or better. I think the vehicle is fine for the market and design. I am hiPSI over there. Who are you?

Another factor is the tendency of owners to be more vocal on a forum with complaining/bellyaching vs. expressing a sense of satisfaction. What percentage of threads start with " My New 4Runner Has Crossthreaded Leaf Spring U-Bolts (sarcasm)" as oppose to threads starting with " Hey I just hit 38,293 miles on my 4Runner and wanted to check-in and say everything is great! I am completely satisfied!". Human nature I guess.

For example. I need a fence installed. Someone recommends Fence Company A. I look at the google reviews for fence Company A - horrible! I didn't call fence Company A. In the last 3 months 4 seperate people rave about Fence Company A. I decide to call Fence Company A. Stay tuned on Fence Company A's quote Ok maybe not the best example, but shows that majority of people tend to be vocal about an issue and how easily that complaint can be preceived as a common problem.

Try a $70k GM and see what you get. A door handle insert and a latch issue don't make the vehicle a lemon. And in this day and age, $48K isn't really a whole lot.

Working for an auto parts manufacturing company, I can tell you that these things happen from time to time from EVERY manufacturer and supplier. Some are caught before they hit the end customer, while some are not.

I guess if you don't shop around...I bought the most expensive 4Runner (Limited w/ automatic running boards) and it was the most expensive on the lot and paid significantly less then that. I know some areas mark up TRD Pros to be more expensive but I would never consider paying ADM. Take a drive...save several thousand dollars.

I have over 175,000 miles between a 2008, 2012 and 2016 4Runners...and I've only ever had one warranty claim between the three trucks.

I just had to have a chuckle over this comment. My buddy has my 2nd gen now and is getting up close to twice that many miles. On ONE truck. It had it's head gaskets done under warranty. And I managed to bork a master cylinder trying to bleed a rear slave cylinder. He had to put a new clutch and hydraulics in it. That's pretty much it. I put some offroad shocks on it that are probably shot by now - I haven't ridden in it in a couple of years.

Well obviously the rear window mechanism has been replaced like 4 times. Total achilles heal on those trucks.

So you're saying that you didn't pay $48k either? I live in FL and when I bought my S2000 The dealers around here were charging $50k+ for them. I drove to North Carolina in the winter and got mine for $31k. There's a sucker born every minute but it didn't make the S2k a $50k car. Please, keep paying way over MSRP and keep my resale up!

I thought of this thread when the blower fan in my 5,700-mile 2016 Trail suddenly made a tremendous crashing racket and then continued rattling and vibrating afterward. My first thought was that the OP of this thread was right, and they aren't making them like they used to.

See my thread "Blower Fan Noise - Solved" for the real story on this "quality control failure." Toyota's build quality reputation remains untarnished -- at least as related to this particular incident.

My hood release slipped out of the latch a month or so back, wasn't too bad to get it back where it belongs. I assume you are under warranty so just make them work for it, I am sure it will be solid once a few bugs worked out.
