86 4runner Carburetor problem??

hey guys i just regsitered tot his thread becuz i just bought an 86 4runner 4x4 with the 22r motor but its carburetor not fuel injected....the problem is after about 11 miles of driving it, it starts to die out, and you gotta wait a few hours before u can start it up and drive it again...it still needs some work but why is it doing thatt? could it be running too lean?? this is my first carburetor experience....o and when it starts to die out, u can still start it but you cant drive it and it sounds really bad and sounds as if the engine is louder and high ideling....
please help it would be appreciated.

It sounds like you have a bad needle and seat. In the carburetor there is a float that rides up and down on the gasoline coming into the float bowl much like the float assembly in a toilet tank works. The needle and seat shuts off the fuel before it overflows the float bowl and starts dumping raw gas into the engine which floods it out. If you buy a carburetor rebuild kit it will have a new needle and seat and instructions on how to set the float. Your only other options are a rebuilt carb or having someone else rebuild yours.

i guess that could be possible, and thats what im going to do, rebuild it or get some one to rebuild it, i know theres prob a million threads on this alredy but i didnt have the time to search cuz the truck was still stuck and i needed a quick response, and u can smell the engine and gas kinda mixed in together and alot of carbon or black smoke is coming out of the exhaust....well i finally brought her home and she is louder than ever ...and do u know who much it costs to a do a rebuild?? roughly?

Generally to get started you remove the air filter assembly and look for a tag (usually made of metal) attached to one of the carburetor screws This tag has a number stamped on it which identifies your carburetor. Write down this number and call around to Toyota parts dept. or other auto parts store to find out what is available. I have no idea of price. You haven't said where you live so if you are not in the U.S. it may be harder to get the kit. If you buy the kit it comes with instructions, new gaskets, an accelerator pump and an assortment of clips that hold linkages etc. Rebuilding a carburetor is not really difficult. You might also get help from an auto shop teacher at your local high school.

o ok that doesnt sound to hard, but is that all ill pretty much need? a rebuilding kit because i found some on ebay for a pretty decent price and ill figure out how to rebuild it, i used to work on all my supras when i had them, o highschool would be useful when it comes to these things because the help is free lol...thanks alot

You should " boil out" the carb while it is apart. There are various cleaners available such as Parts Dip which comes with a basket inside the can and allows you to submerge all the metal parts in cleaner. Access to air pressure to blow out all the small passages is also a good thing. How much cleaning is up to you, if it seems fairly clean inside you may be able to just put in the new parts from the kit and reinstall. Let us know how it goes, maybe take some pictures etc as I don't remember seeing anyone posting about a carburetor rebuild. You will need a metric wrench to remove the carb and needle nose pliers to remove clips, screwdrivers and a wrench for removing the seat should be all the tools you will need.
