'86 4runner Turbo Radiator

Hey guys, my '86 turbo is running on the original radiator doesn't leak but temp is in the middle range jumping up one light up bar (digital cluster) above the mid range if I'm reving high. Not a big deal but, I've seen aluminum radiators for the R22 NA 4runners for $140, not available for the turbo and the OEM turbo radiator runs $500 plus. I only see one little spout at the top of the radiator that goes directly to the turbo, I don't see a return line to the radiator so I assume it returns to the engine block. QUESTION can I get one of these all-aluminum radiators and a add the turbo spout? or can I feed the turbo fresh coolant by taping into a hose or other point?

One of the most popular radiator mods on the turbo models is use a 3 row V6 radiator and have a radiator shop weld the spout on for the coolant return line from the turbo.

Thanks for the reply I was looking through the Haynes manual and began to think that the spout on the Radiator was a the return line which should be no big deal adding, and now you've confirmed it. I assume the v6 radiator to be moded is from the first gens also, but would really like to know if this could be done with the second gen V6 radiator also, I did search turbo radiator and found no relevant info.:frog:

Not sure if they are the same in the second gen but I wouldn't doubt it. Even if it is slightly different as long as the mounting holes are in the same location you are good to go. Even then a drill and tap will get you where you need to be.

I was able to find an aftermarket turbo radiator at my local carquest. I want to say it was $140. it is a three row and does really well. (using it on my 22re until I finish building my turbo engine.

Is carquest an auto parts store in Arizona? I've never heard of it, it would make sense that parts would be more affordable in off road county.

I sell those turbo rads all day long in my shop .. but I'm in Canada , and there a little bit more the 140.00 .. 240.00 is more like it ..

But the return spout CAN be added to ANY rad that fits the 4runner right? Have you done this and found problems down the line?

The only problem that can arise is if they do a poor job of brazing the new nipple on, assuming everything fits and the rad is in otherwise good condition.

Excelent! Out of curiosity how many bars does the temperature go up on your electronic dash under normal driving?
