87 22RE 4x4 Auto transmission question

I recently bought a 87 pickup 4x4 auto that needs some work.


22RE
4x4
Auto
30-80LE plate on tranny
Transmission has 2 oil/fluid pans (A340F right?)


Symptoms:
Really loose shifter (search and found the fix with the plastic bushings)
Seems like it will not stay in the Drive gear, it feels super sloppy. I can change gear without pressing the shifter. I been pushing the truck in and out of my garage in Neutral and Drive gear. This normal?

Big problem:
Will not move in Drive. All others work fine


I havent had much time to play with the tranny because the truck needs a headgasket change and coolant and oil are mixing at the moment so Im fixing that first

Once I complete the top end work, what should I start on the tranny ?

Anybody know what I can pull the tranny off from?
Looking for a direct swap (take off , put in replacement)
Year range and models and also what exact transmission do I have?

Once you get to tranny,do your normal checks from manual. Then if you find its shot any 85-95 will work,if you find a v6 one just swap your bell housings and it will bolt to your 4 banger. But make sure you get the t-case cooler with the v6 and mount

So pretty much look for any 4x4 auto tranny from 85-95 toyota trucks/4runner?

If I find a V6 = Swap bellhousing
4 cly = direct fit it.


What about if my tranny has 2 oil pans? I read only some do

From what I've been told by many Toy lovers is that you need the f150 tranny for the 3.0 You want a W56 if you choose to do a manual swap. Not sure what kind of auto tranny the 22re has, though.

the auto is an A340 series or basically a jeep AW4 with different tail housing which allows you to use np series t-cases

call around the yards on north shepard and I-10, other than that no idea. You could try your hand at rebuilding it your self

What do guys think? Could the NSS cause my issues? I can grab the linkage bar and mave it manually.

It looks new compared to the rest of the tranny so Im guessing P.O took a swing at trying to fix it

The difference between the A340F (behind the 22RE from '85 to '89, and I've heard it's behind the Taco 4cyl until '95 but don't quote me) and the A340H (behind the 3.0 until '95)is the oil pans - the F has a distinct transfer case with an oil pan for each, the H has the transfer case built into the transmission so they share an oil pan.

They're basically the same transmission. When the A340F in my '86 went south, I replaced it with an A340H (reused my old belhousing though) and didn't have to do anything hinky in terms of wiring or housing or computer, we hooked it up and it went to work. So I think either should work for you.

Ive got an 86 4runner, 22RE w/auto.......Can I swap in a 3.0 and auto from an 89 donor? Any other options for a 22RE w/auto engine swap?
