kentuckyturbo

my 4runner is dying, well more or less the engine, when i drove it up from florida to kentucky i almost made it home when the 2 and 3 cylinders stop receiving fuel, making it impossible to drive, it wouldnt even stay running for more than a a couple of seconds, so i had to get it towed to a shop in near by bowling green ky, two weeks later, the shop gave up, i then got it towed to louisville 2 hours north and put it in a shop near my dads house, the mechanic said that the fuel injection module was not working, it wouldnt even push gas, so about two months later he gets the part in and then finds out the the head is blown as well so, finally i got it back about two days ago, its finished and seems to be running fine, so i drive to my house in town and it makes it no problem. I go to drive it back out to my dads house and its starts losing power like its not firing properly and wont go over 15 mph so i pull over, i get out and notice that its blowing fiberglass from the cat out the exhaust, so i thought that the exhaust was just clogged or somthing, so i cut the exhaust off with a hack saw about 5 inch before the cat and tie the exhaust off to the side, it still runs like hell but it was enough to get it home, and now it sounds like a turbo charged lawn mower, and has about the same power. if there is anyone that can tell me what is going on with my engine or has any ideas at all, please reply to this post, it would be greatly appreciated.

There are some amazingly good folks over there with way more knowledge about these motors than what I have. But this is what I would start with:

Check to make sure all vaccuum lines are firmly attached and not leaking, cracked or split anywhere. Check your charge pipe at the throttle body, make sure that it isn't letting any air in from outside. What would be helpfull is if you can pressurize your turbo inlet(from air filter/AFM) with about 3 psi of compressed air, leaks will become very obvious, even from around the manifold. If all of that checks out I would then move to the AFM, if you don't how to test it download the 1988 FSM. It is actually very easy, you will need a multimeter. If the AFM checks out then check and adjust your TPS if needed, similar procedure here with the multimeter and some feeler gauges.
If you can't find a problem with any of that check your fuel pump, fuel filter and as a last resort you can pull your fuel injectors and have them sent out for a testing/cleaning.

And another easy thing to check that could be the problem. Make sure your coil/igniter and distributor wires are all securely connected, also check your timing. Hard to say what could have happened with all the work that was done on it recently. Fuel injection module?? Sounds like he replaced your ECU, maybe a connection there could have worked loose. The valves could need an adjustment (when warmed up)...and the head bolts should probably be retightened (do this when the engine is cool).

thank you so much for your help, I acctually tried to drive it about 17 miles, and got about 7 and the engine wasnt putting out enough power to get up very slight grades so i had to ditch it in the parking lot of a funeral home.., sounds like a bad omen, so i will be sure to post on the other site and try some of those tests to get the old girl back running right, ill post back on my progress
