88 4runner lifts?

Looking to buy a 88 Sr5 runner bone stock with no rust. Gonna go see the guy in a week to pick it up but would like some info bout lift options. I just got rid of my built FJ and would like to build this runner for moderate wheeling. Not looking at doing a sas @ this point, just looking to fit the 33's I am keeping from my old rig and still get decent flex. Would like to stay in the six to eight hundred range on price. What lift would you all recommend?

absolutely no options for IFS and flex
dont put blocks on the rear leaf springs or you will break them.
to clear 33s youll need 2.5 ball joint spacers and +2 all leaf springs.
if you want to do it the right way then youll need to a full IFS lift they are like 1300$
if you go cheap you break, if you go cheap you fail.
SAS is the only way to go to get a good articulation.
it would also help if you define "moderate wheeling" moderate for some is just crawling speed bumps and hitting mud puddles. moderate for me is a day a dont roll over.

Well aware I won't get much flex out of an IFS rig after owning an FJ for four years but would like to get something decent in the previously mentioned price range. As for moderate wheeling, I am at this point looking for a daily driver that can go out and handle some mid level trails on the weekend. It will be bout a year till my true daily driver is back up and running and the runner is in the garage for more aggressive mods (sas).

I would look at the Old Man Emu suspension kits. The OME kits are awesome on and off road with a moderate amount of lift. You could get even get another 1.5" or so by adding some ball joint spacers up front and longer shackles in the rear.

Then if you really need to you could add a small (1-2") body lift later.

OP, don't listen to anybody that bags on the IFS. You don't need a straight axle unless you're planning on running seriously hardcore trails, the stock IFS setup is nearly as flexy as the stock straight axle setup and can take you almost anywhere. It's true that the straight axle can be made flexier easier, but you can get flex from IFS too. The easiest way is to install ball joint spacers, and then relax your torsion bars to return it to stock height, and that'll improve your flex for sure. Your other option to fake flex is to widen your wheelbase, either with adapter-style wheel spacers, or by dropping a grand or more on a control-arm lift like Blazeland or Total Chaos.

You don't need to swap to a straight axle and you don't need to install one of those wonky 4" bracket lifts to get performance from your truck. Good tires and good driving will take you far. If you need a mild lift, I second the OME suggestion, you rarely see anybody wishing they hadn't installed one. :)

It also depends on how much lift you want. The rough country 5" sus lift costs 600$ and can be put in by anyone (that's what I have). Yes It does come with blocks for the rear, so I suggest getting different leafs or getting a solid traction bar, but other than that it's a great lift that'll leave you plenty of performance for your ifs.

^ I second this. I have one on my 4runner and on my 88 p/u. I do moderate off roading (mud and snow, not rock) and have never broke or damaged anything. Still a nice smooth ride on the road, even with aggressive tires.

I was looking at that lift, I liked the price but I am concerned about whether or not my 33's will fit and wont rub. I am also concerned that it looks to be a mall crawl lift, after owning an FJ I am used to being able to almost hang with Rubicons when crawling. I would like to build this up so I can atleast hang with my old FJ buddys when wheeling. I do plan on locking the rear before long and upgrading the suspension components as time and $$ allow. I have seen some peoples threads speaking bout a sum mod on the rear, what is that exactly? I also checked out Toytecs ball joint spacer and rear add a leaf kit, I would prefer adding entirely new leaf packs and gaining more than just 2". If I went the Toytec route what would it take to gain more than 2"? I know I asking s ton of questions but want to spend $$ where it will count and get the best bang for my buck.

You should be able to easily fit 33's with the 4inch lift. If you are looking to save money, you can usually pick up a used lift off craiglist. A lot of people SAS and sell the old lift, usually around $200 (at least where i am at). Install is easy too. Unbolt old, lift it up, and bolt on new. That would be your best bet i would say, then if you want more you can always look into ball joint spacers, shackels, upgraded springs, etc.

/\ I agree with Ajordan again but... Those are $uper $pendy!!

they are....... but whoever told you wheeling was a cheap hobby LIED to you! :biggrin2:

it's cheaper to do it once. if you plan to SAS eventually then save for it now. put a locker in the back and wheel that poop till you can afford to SAS it. no point in doing a lift on an IFS when you're thinking about a SAS down the road.

Yeah, wheelin is definitely not Cheap! I would really like to do a Total Chaos long travel IFS lift on a rig someday, probably a 2wheel drive truck though. I think that would be Sick!

Get the 33s, trim a bit, and run it stock with low profile upper bumpstops. I find the IFS is most reliable in its stock form, after all, that is how Toyota designed it.

Put your money into gears, lockers, and armor

5" of lift is WAY WAY too much lift for 33's! You don't need much if any lift for 33's. I would run some BJ spacers up front and either an add-a-leaf or longer shackles in the rear.

I ran 33" KM2s on stock torsion bars with 1.5" ball joint spacers, and had a little rub on the rear fender liner at full stuff.

Nice truck, Richard. Nice avatar, too. :)
