90runner died and wont start

when i loosen that bolt there is a screw probably about 4 inches long that comes out of it. if im looking at the engine from the front it swings to the left and right if i loosen the bolt. what im talking about also has the distributor belt connected to it, the wheel of it anyway.

Are we talking about The unit that your spark plug wires are going to?

thats the distributor cap right? right below it is a metal circlular object that the distributor belt goes to(i think thats the belt) inside the object i can see copper coils.

Does it look similar to this? This is attachment from Autozone.

I think you are talking about the alternator?

ah man i am getting myself confused. yeah im thinking of the alternator and alternator belt. okay so right under the distributor cap should be the actual distributor? im going to walk outside and look to make sure i know what your talking about

Follow your spark plug wires from the spark plugs to the other end and that would be you distributor. It is behind the alternator.

ah okay its like half of the distributor cap yeah? i think i know what your talking about. and directly on top of it i see what i think are the timing marks? and if im standing at the drivers side tire with the hood open to the right of the cap is the bolt your talking about

That is correct. But, there are no timing marks on it. The timing mark is on the outer edge of the crankcase pulley down below, and you set it by turning the distributor, while the engine is running and timing light in hand, matching that pulley mark to the #s on the jagged plate that is on the lower timing belt cover. Play with it tomorrow and you will see what I mean. :')

When yo get the light at Autozone, they will show you how to use it.

ah okay. im not sure what i was seeing but on top of it there was a | and it another one under it. but they werent lined up. so just to cover. hook up the timing light. point it at the jagged #1 timing cover where the #s are? and when i turn the distributor what will go up and down?

i forgot to check but im not sure if autozone will rent one. i may have to go buy a $15 one from harbor freight. thats why i was making sure i knew how to use it if i had to do that

Look at the plate down below before you begin, you may need to wipe it clean so you can see numbers on it. The timing light is like a strobe light. It lights when your #1 plug fires, so point the strobe at the lower timing cover plate while it is running, the mark on the outer edge of the pulley will move up or down on that scale, depending on which way you turn the distributor, left or right. Set the timing at 10 degrees before top dead center. TDC is the zero mark on that plate. 10 should be toward the left, or passenger side.

ah okay i see now. so i dont need to set it to TDC again or anything right? i only need to move the distributor up and down

Yes, this will work. Make sure you double check it after you tighten the distributor. You should now have your truck back. Not too bad eh?

man. seems like its just making more and more problems. so after i put the sealant on the water outlet i was driving it around testing it. and now ive got smoke coming from the spark plugs i think? when i removed one spark plug there was oil on it. please tell me thats not a bad head gasket

i just dont understand how that could mess up. i didnt take anything off that could affect that besides changing spark plugs

How soon did you drive the car after you sealed the water outlet? Did you let the sealant cure? Did the engine ever get hot when you were running it without the radiator in? Or, when you drove it while the water jacket was leaking? If so, it may have been too hot and oil dripped onto plug from valve cover. Was oil on the internal part of the plug?

OK, to check if it is your head gasket, look inside your radiator for oil on top, pull the oil dip stick and see if the level is high. ( If coolant is present it would be at the bottom, raising the oil level ) If no oil in radiator, and normal oil level, a leakink valve cover may be the issue.

the water outlet is sealed. i waited about 2 hrs before driving it. i didn't see oil on the tip of the spark plug just around the threads. but even after i cleaned them off i still get alot of smoke coming from both sides where the spark plugs are. there isnt any oil in the radiator i checked and it never did over heat on me. remember that hose i was telling you about that comes off the top valve cover drivers side? it comes up and then a 90 deg fitting connects it to my MAF its broken and i didn't think it was a big deal. but i used some gorilla tape and tried to seal it off the best i could. but i started my truck and pull the hose off and my truck stalled. I called toyota and they don't even know what im talking about lol. do you know the proper name for this hose? it smells like gas/oil mixture that goes into the MAF. if i had a camera id take a picture. i'll check online to see if i can find one and show you
