91 4runner question

4runner newbie here! Just bought a 91 4Runner. The rear door will only open when the window is all the way down. Any thoughts as to why? Thanks/

its a safety thing, so the tailgate cant go down, while its still in the track, or partially up and hit something...

Im assuming tailgate...

The tailgate will ONLY open when the glass is all the way down and the door has been unlocked.

Why would you want to lower it with the glass out?

When the glass is at the top position or any position besides all the way rolled down it sits in a "groove" in the body; so the tailgate cannot open until the window is all the way down. If the tailgate could be opened with the window partly down the glass would shatter.

Actually, Tanner, with the angle of the sides of the rear window, it will clear the body grooves after rolling down only a couple inches--that's how I replaced the glass on my old '94. Like the others mentioned, mjw, there's an interlock that prevents the door from unlocking with the glass up any, BUT it can be overridden if you need to work on it (like any door lock, you just pop the actuator rod out of the connector, and it won't lock at all).

Oh really? hmm, I swear on my '85 the window is deep enough into the groove to prevent it from "falling out" at all. Guess i'll have to take a better look at it hehe :cheers:

It could be, but you have a 1st gen and Bucknuts is a 2nd...

Oh I know his is a 2nd gen. I thought the 1st and 2nd gen. window tracks were similar. Guess not

take a screwdriver, and push in on the latches. same as if the gate were closed. the window will now roll up/down. but be careful, have a way to support it, if you roll it up, while the gate is down, it will fall out....
