92 4Runner Sputtering on Accel

First let me start off by saying thank GOD I found a 4Runner only site :)

This is the 2nd 4Runner I've owned, and other than a few kinks, this baby is going to be sweet.

It's a 1992 SR5 3.0 5speed (186,000K), Problem is, it is currently throwing a code 21 (O2 Sensor fault), getting that replaced tomorrow (woulda done it myself, but the previous owner had someone WELD THE DANG THING ON!.. I hate lazy mechanics...). My Issue is, is the O2 sensor to blame for the absolute lack of power? I take off from 1st, and it's sputtering and choking itself out, and takes FOREVER to get up to speed. I did a tuneup on it yesterday. New NGK Vpower Plugs, Wires, Cap, Rotor, K&N Air Filter. Before I did the tune up, it REALLY ran like crap, Idled real rough. It is running really rich, and I'm only currently getting 164 miles out of a fully topped off tank of gas. My Previous 'Runner had the 22RE, and was an '89.

I also have that damn popular mid-rpm (2800-3200) Valve rattle (rod knock? Can't tell the difference TBH), it's rather annoying, and I was wondering if there was anything reccomended that I could put in the oil/gas to quiet it down/eliminate it? Parusing the Internet, I've heard rumors that a Vacuum'ed foaming fuel injector treatment would remedy this, but I don't see how... is it true?

Thanks in advance, and it's dang nice to be here :)

Hot diggity Im with you on the Accel thing. Mine was most recently partially resolved by a faulty spark plug lead. I think the O2 will fix alot of your probs but not sure about the splutter. Ive been battling a slight splutter for 18 months now but to no avail. I can't afford to replace too much stuff but next on my hit list is fuel filter, a can of SeaFoam and maybe the coolant temp sensor as the splutter gets a bit better when the car warms up.

Ive also heard the EGR valve and Fuel Pressure Reg but those I am still not totally sold on.

Good luck, let me know what fixes it!

I have the same problem with my 92 4runner. when u first start it up has no power till it warms up and bad gas mileage. Also now its will die when idling. I have changed plugs and wires. I took it to my local Toyota deal and the O2 sensor what they said was wrong with my 4runner.
I have the new O2 sensor but the having a hard time getting the old one off. The rust on the bolts are giving me the problem. One socket it is to small and the next size is to big. Dont remember the size of the socket right off.

Try spraying a ****load of PB Blaster or something similar and letting it soak in overnight to loosen up the rust. Also you might have the wrong socket set. Maybe you have an imperial set but the nuts are in metric?

I still havnt changed my O2 sensor, lol, let me know how it goes if it fixes the problem.

Well I got my O2 changed. Had to heat the nuts up to a cherry red to break them lose. Check engine light is off now but I still have no power. Think it maybe a plug, plug wire, or dis cap. I hope anyway cause fuel mileage is going down badly. I also have a new prolbem, my altnator is not charging my battery like it should. Took alt off had it check and its good. Had battery checked too.

A clogged cat conv will cause a lack of power.
A clogged fuel filter will cause stumbling on acceleration.

well i have changed fuel filter and drilled some hole in cat conv and it hasnt helped im going to cut cat conv off to see if it helps.

4runner issues

hi there i have a 92 4runner with a 3vze petrol v6 the issue is it is idling iradically and while driving it is coughing and sputtering and it has gone through 2 and 1/2 tanks of fuel in 331klm also there is fuel in the oil and it is smoking black, i have replaced the throttle position sensor, all 6 injectors, the knock sensor (as they did come up in the trouble codes) i have checked the spark plugs they seem to be working ok (a bit black from the over fueling)i have also changed the fuel pressure regulator i would really appreciate any ideas cause i have ran out of them
