'92 Rescue Runner

I finally got it all back together, what a difference the 5.29s make! I can actually go up hills now at a reasonable speed. It is still a 4banger, but nothing like it was.

Gears and my axle will be donr at virtua;;y the same time like yours. CAN"T WAIT!!!
 
It's been a while since I have updated this. Still am planning on cutting out the rear suspension to do leafs. So If anybody wants my rear setup, let me know (fj80 coils with 2" 4crawler spacers, 4crawler panhard drop, and possibly shocks). I won't take it apart until I start the swap. It flexes really well, I just need something a little bigger without modifying the links.
In the mean time, I took some pics on a recent hunting trip to the Umatilla National Forest in northeastern Oregon. My runner makes my dads lifted duramax look short. haha



 
So today I decided to pull my pan because I have been neglecting a slow leak. I have been lazy and let it get to the point where oil got on my new steering components and axle. :cry: Nothing some snow can't remove though. :thumb3:
After I pulled the pan I found this. Plastic timing chain guide fragments from the one of the PO. When I did the chain on mine nothing was broken, so this must have been from the first timing chain job. It was messy but I am glad I'm not leaking anything anymore.
 
Alright guys and gals. Need some outside opinions on this one.

My temp gauge has been acting kinda funny. It has been running higher than usual when going down the street. It will sometimes slowly creep higher and higher almost to the red then drop back down below half super quickly. I have pulled over when it has gotten to the red and my engine does not smell hot and the coolant isn't boiling or anything.
I noticed it really climbs when I am going up hill, don't know if it coincidence though (I was on Mt. Hood tonight), but doesn't overheat.
My suspicion is my temp sending unit is going haywire but I figured I'd ask you guys before I go replacing it. Anyone know what it should be reading in ohms to test it?
I just don't think my engine is the temp it is saying is. Could it be a thermostat issue?

I would lean towards the sending unit. If the gauge says your overheating and you look and its not boiling at all,no smell of coolant,nothing;must be the sending unit. BUT ive put several differnt t-stats in, ending with a dual stage from the 3.0 i believe, i had similar overheating problems as well. but only on startup, never after running for even 2 hrs up a mountain. So i guess thats my main reason for thinking its not tstat. I do not know how to test the sending unit, but i think mine be going out as well, because i still have the overshoot problem some days. anyway hope that sheds some light, im sure someone more experienced than myself with chime in.GL and update us if you find the culprit

At least I am not the only one! haha. I hope it is just the sending unit. Makes me nervous when it is getting up there. So you used a 3.0 t-stat in a 22re?
 
Im pretty sure it is.its a dual stage tstat so even at low temp coolant still floes through. I got the idea from a thread on here or yotatech, don't remember. I searched and searched for 22re temp overshoot, and after using a 180degree tstat and a tstat for a turbo,.both helped but still had problem. Then i landed on the tstat i have now. It helped alot,but the problem is still there.ive been too bust lately to replace the sending unit,i hope that's my issue because after that,i don't know what the hell the problem could be
 
Well I took the thermostat housing off today and one of the bolts snapped. Now to figure out how to get this thing out. AH! :frusty:
 
Dammit...dont you love older trucks haha. My favorite way to get a broken bolt out is to take a dremel and make a cut in the top of the bolt shaped like. -- that's deep and long enough for a flathead to get it...soaked in pb blaster of coarse.GL
 
It has had a couple doses of pb blaster, I need to get a bigger easy out in the morning. Hope that works. Already have a replacement bolt.
 
So I ended up breaking both bolts. Had to Heli-coil the one I broke first. First time ever using one. Actually worked pretty well! I think this was my whole issue. I have only driven it about 10 min but the temp stayed steady right in the center. I'll let you guys know how it holds up. :biggrin1:
It was such a fun day replacing this crap during this cold snap we are going through. At least it was not snowing while I was working. The mustang always gets the garage.
 
I hope so. As much as I want to go drive it around to see if it is fixed. Sitting in front of my wood stove with a cold beer sounds much more relaxing at the moment. :cheers:
