I have 33" Bfg all terrains on a 4" body lift with 8" rear axle and 3.90 rear ratio. It's slugs around with the new tires and wanted to regear it to 4.30 ratio. Can anyone suggest anything else or a go website to get the ring and pinion gears.

If you're going to be in the axles anyway, might as well put 4.88's in and get it back to stock acceleration with those 33's. Plenty of quality sites with gears, such as Marlin Crawler, Trail-Gear, Randy's Ring and Pinion, Low Range Offroad, etc..

Yeah, with these engines, they just don't have the low-end power, so the gearing is a bigger factor than with a beefier powerplant. You need to step up the gearing with each step up in tire size or you pay the price in sluggish performance. Once you're past 35's with 5.29's, it's time to think about other engines to keep up...but at those sizes, breaking things becomes the bigger worry (LOL).

Actually, the factory tended to gear one step lower (higher numerically) with the automatic transmission. With the 31" option tires, the factory gearing was already 4.56, so two sizes up would put you at 5.29's. That's the price you pay for engines with minimal torque. If an engine swap is on the menu for the future, you could go back down, as the engine would be more capable of taking up the slack.

So I'm new to the 4runner world right, well me and my brother both looked up the gearing for the 8" axle on the 95 4runner and he got 3.90, I got 4.30, so what your saying is that the stock gearing is actually 4.56. So 4.88 would be the bare minimum upgrade then. And 5.29 would be the better choice then or no. This whole gearing thing really confuses me lol

Stock gearing depends on 2wd vs 4wd, 29" vs 31" tires, automatic vs. manual, and whether or not you had a tow package. 4.30 is the stock gearing for a 4WD with automatic transmission and 29" tires, 3.90 is the stock gearing for a 2wd truck.

My suggestion would be 4.56 gears, assuming that you're the 3.0 motor with a 5 speed. Go one step higher if you've got an automatic or the 22RE, and go to 5.29s if both.

U got 2 threads going for this?
33x 4-cyl.x 5-spd = 4.88
33x 4-cyl.x auto = 5.29 Same for V6 :smash:
Don't worry about the 8" rearend its plenty strong.
