95 part out worth it?

So my buddy that bought my '95 with a blown head gasket has given up on her. We got it all tore down and the heads machined and she's been sitting since. I considered buying it back but he wants $1200 for it as that what he has in buying it from me and parts/machine work to the heads. I really don't want the parts as if I bought it back it'd be getting some sort of swap done. I'm trying to talk him into just parting it out. You guys think we could get the 1200 back out of it? He's got $400-$500 in new parts (DNJ head gasket kit, DNJ bolts, Aisin water pump, Aisin oil pump, timing belt kit). The truck was my daily before it blew so the auto trans and drivetrain are good. What are your thoughts?

The money you'll get from parting it out will be a fraction of what you'll get from putting it back together and selling it whole. $1200 would be reaching. What's stopping him from fixing it?

Laziness. He's got parts strewn all over the place now so I doubt with our experience it'll be right. Part of the agreement of him buying it was I'd help him fix it but it became more of me fixing it in my free time and he'd show up when was convenient for him.

Personally. I would tell him no. Just for what you paid and the parts can be included.. The deal was that you would help him fix it, not fix it for him. So with the cost of your time spent already fixing it i would seem that would be a fair trade off depending on how much time you have spend that is... but if you want it back, buy it, if not, let him deal with it and figure it out considering its not your fault HE is giving up on it(especially considering it is you doing the fixing not him)

Yes you can get 1200 out of it if you part it depending on who needs what in your area and who wants to pay for it. I bought a parts rig for 100 and have surpassed the 1200 mark in parting it out. Thats not including the parts that i have pulled for my own truck. So results not typical but very do able.

Parting out a truck takes time and a lot of it. If you have a place to store it for free that helps, pulling the parts, answering emails or phone calls, finding a box, packaging it, shipping it, it all take so much time. you will not "make" any money. Fix it sell it, or scrap it as is.
