Ok, so i bought this 95 from an individual and he told me the key wont unlock doors from the exterior. however it starts the vehicle, it is not a toyota key. it is a key from lowes or something. i have to keep my doors unlocked at all times. so what im wondering is what do i need to get back to being able to unlock from exterior. i found a 95 identical to mine in a junk yard with 2 toyota factory keys. what do i need to pull from it to replace mine with.. any help is greatly appreciated..

Before you go pulling the lock cylinders from your doors have you check them to see if they are just bound up? I use a non Toyota key for my doors and ignition but my passenger door lock cylinder gets jammed up every now and then. You can spray some cleaner/lubrication in from the outside and work it in with the key.
I bought used car once in college, it was rearended and the trunk replaced, however they never swapped the locking mechanism. The key would go in, but wouldn't turn. Could be the same situation... I doubt it w/ both doors, but you never know.
edit: He also may have put an ignition system from a different toyota, therefore keys dont match..

Like 83 said it could be any combination of these and you might find that if you want to have one key for the doors and ignition you are going to have to change some parts, but make sure you know what your issue is first.

Try wd40 on the door locks before you buy anything. You would have to find a full lock set with key. You would need ignition, both doors and the rear tailgate.

It's possible the iginition was replaced. I had a Civic that was stolen and the ignition and steering lock was broken. Ended up replacing the whole steering and ignition assembly. I also had to re-key the ignition to match the door lock.
If you want a key to the doors, you could take the VIN number to dealer and they can make you a new key.

It's easier said than done. I've never had to replace the iginition switch on my T4R, but I'm pretty sure it's installed with break away bolts, like most vehicles with a steering lock.
If you want all you locks to match, you will have to get them re-keyed. I was able to get a key re-made at the dealer for the price of the blank, for my HD beater.
BTW how cheap is dirt cheap? $10
Because it will probably cost less than that to get a key made at the dealer.

Get a key made from Toyota based on the VIN. My ignition was different too but ny doors were still factory. So my Toyota made key works on the doors but not the ignition

It's easier to re-key one instead of the whole car, even if it's just the iginition.

I didn't say to rekey it. I said to have a key made based on his vin. Since the key he has obviously isn't factory

You and the OP would have to re-key if you want all the locks to match, including the igintion. That way you don't have two different keys for the T4R.
When I was replacing the Igntion on my Civic. I got a new Key made from my VIN at the dealer so I had a fresh key that was not worn down. Then I gave my whole Igintion assembly and the fresh key to a locksmith, before I installed it in my Civic, and he was able to re-key to match my Fresh key.
It may be harder for the locksmith to re-key the ignition to match when it's in the vehicle, but they should be able to do it.
