95 Tailgate Window Key Switch

alright folks, I'm new here and finally got my post count up enough to start this thread. I've searched the forums, the interwebs, everywhere trying to find a solution that won't cost me a new switch and visit to a locksmith. Here's my problem:

My tailgate key switch to raise and lower the window will ONLY raise the window. The key will rotate LEFT to raise, but WILL NOT rotate RIGHT to lower the window. Does anyone have a viable fix for this, or do I need to get on eBay and buy me a switch for $40?

I've used this forum with much success for other issues, such as the wiper safety switch, fan blower switch, dash tear down, etc. None of my searches solve this conundrum.

I welcome your thoughts and ideas.

pull the interior cover and than the internal metal cover and check the key switch contacts with a test light or a DMM to see if it has power for going down. I don't remember what wire is which but mine was intermittent both ways.
it was the connection at the switch connector inside the door if that make sense.
Fixed it when i added an internal switch to lower the window from inside the cargo area.

Sounds like your key is worn and your switch is also worn, and the combination doesn't work together anymore. You might try having a locksmith (not KMart or Walmart) cut you a new key - the proper height bumps on the key might be enough to get it to work again.

If you have a relatively unused key lying around you might try that as well.

Very good point. Maybe I'll pop it out and take it to a locksmith and have them cut a key off the code. I tried removing it a week ago, but couldn't get the clip off...so I started tinkering elsewhere. About freaked out when I realized I couldn't get the window back down. Had to cut some excess wire to reverse polarity at the motor.

I got 4 keys from the PO, all were ILCO cuts, and all were pretty worn, and all turn the switch LEFT, but not RIGHT.

Thanks for the insight, but my problem is mechanical with the switch. It just won't turn right. period. I'm gonna try RonJR's idea this weekend.

My key cylinder on my tailgate was completely non-functional, and this made it almost as good as new.

My key cylinder on my tailgate was completely non-functional, and this made it almost as good as new.

I went down to a locksmith on Friday and popped the cylinder out and showed it to the guy. He tried to rebuild it, but I didn't have the time. Turns out the brass keys were out of whack. He hit it with a belt sander and it works like a champ.

Now I just need to get the running boards yanked off and get some new springs for the back.
