This info is for the 95 second gen 4runner V6 petrol.
I just changed the fuel pump on my four runner and would like to put up a detailed thread on how to do it. It took me a fair bit longer than I expected mainly because of all the mis-information and inaccuracy of other threads, or information that wasn't applicable to my make/model.
This isnt a hard job, there was just a couple of snags along the way which made this job much harder than it should've been!
1. Yes the tank HAS TO COME OUT. Why not start by disconnecting your battery and draining some fuel out of the tank. I wouldnt drop it if it's any more than qtr full.
2. Take the shroud off.
3. Under the rear seat is a access cover that will give you access to the pump elec connection and fuel line, and not much else, undo both of those. Note: my fuel line was seized and I did drop the tank with the line still connected, the line is flexible, but getting the sending unit to line back up later on is nearly impossible with this still on. I used some loctite freeze and release.
4. The fill and vent hoses that connect to your tank. THIS IS THE ULTIMATE TIME SAVER. The connections on your tank are just a huge pain to get back on later. Go into the wheel arch, take off the shroud directly under your fuel fill cap and you will see your fill and vent hoses, disconnect them from there! It's so much easier! Your stupid Haynes/gregory's manual will never tell you this though.
5. Your sending unit is next, 7 x 8mm/5-16 bolts. ring ratchets are perfect for this. So if you can, grab a mate, lower your tank with a jack, just enough to get access to these bolts.
6. Once the sending unit is off there are two fuel hoses on the top inboard side of your tank, disconnect those and the elec connection at the front of your tank and it's ready to lower.
7. Hopefully the sending unit will seperate easily from your tank as you lower it and the bracket holding your pump will emerge. Yes it does just pull away from the bracket, so disconnect the elec wires to the pump and the outlet hose. And voila! you should have a pump change that was about 8 hours quicker than mine!!
I cant recommend enough grabbing a mate to help you lower the tank, cos you wil soon realise that there is sweet f.a room in there between your tank and your driveshaft, and your chassis that has a annoying little bolt sticking out that catches on the tank flange as you lower it. You will be forced to lower it in a cork srew-like fashion and bring it forward at the same time. I did lower it by myself, but definitley grabbed someone to put it back up!
