96 4runner 17 inch black wheels 285 tire birthday help

Hey All:

I bought my son a 96 4runner and his birthday is is 3 weeks. The 4runner came with a 3 inch toy tech lift, stock wheels and 265 tires. I am looking to purchase black wheels in 17 inch wheel or 16 inch, with I think a 285 tire with no rubbing if possible. I have been searching for a day on multiple forums and all I see is a bunch of offset and backspacing talk but no facts on what people are running with no rubbing and no pinch weld mod.

So...can people please post the brand/size of wheel and tire that you have installed with no rubbing and no spacers if you have a 3 inch lift?

I will just pick the black wheel I think will look best and buy them since I don't have much time to get it all ready before his birthday. Thank you and much appreciated.

For no rubbing 265 75r16 will be optimum size.

Offhand I'd say to plan on getting a bit of rubbing with 285's.

Thx for the info. I just got off the phone with toytec and basically if I want to go with a 285 I will need to trim the front bumper a bit which I can live with..

How old is your son? And how set are you on 285's? With the right wheel/tire package, 265/75's look plenty big and can be (as long as you keep an eye out on weight) significantly lighter. Make sure you know all of the potential downsides to running 285's. Loss of power, mpg's higher center of gravity, etc etc.

Also of note - a a 3" lift won't get you any more clearance... the suspension travels through the same arc no matter the static height. It might rub LESS, but it won't stop it completely.

265/75-16 or 265/70-17 is the largest size that won't rub. You will still need to have the correct alignment, or it will rub on the back of the fender well. Anything larger or with an offset that pushes the wheels out from the truck will require trimming (front and/or back of front wheel wells) or more work for a rub free fit.

You'll probably also need to flatten your pinch weld at the rear of the fender too.
