96 4wd transmission issue

I have a 96 4runner with 275k on it. Transmission always shifted like new. Then one morning I got in and when I went to back out of the driveway it slammed into reverse like I had been hit by a truck. Shifting into drive and 2nd gear was the same. Once it's warm it shift perfect again. If I let it sit for a couple of hours it shifts hard again. It's shifting hard enough to make me worry about snapping u joints. For the past couple of weeks it has started staying in first gear for about a mile before its violent shift to 2nd. Has anyone else had this issue before?

I've never had that issue and currently I have about 322k on my 96 4 runner. I've been running Lucas Transmission fix on mine for about 100k just because it is so old and has so many miles. I would immediately change the transmission fluid and flush it and then add a full bottle of Lucas when refilling along with your transmission fluid of choice. Chances are that will solve your issues of hard shifts when cold for at another 100k miles.
