96' Constant Rotational Metal Squealing After Turning (Passenger Wheel)

Oi,

Was driving on the freeway when I noticed that whenever I would make a slight turn a constant rotational (proportional to my velocity) metal squealing sound would appear from the front passenger wheel. This sound would temporarily go away once the wheel was centred and usually after I applied the brakes slightly but would return after turning again.

This sound continued and was much worse while on my way home and I have not driven since...

My initial thoughts are CV, possibly some metal shaving have gotten into the boot?

Check your wheel bearing. This happened to one of my other vehicles, you described by situation exactly. Luckily for you, the 4Runner only requires a bearing and not an entire hub assembly!

Thanks for the replies, took a look under the truck and couldn't see anything out of the ordinary. I will have to take the wheel off when I have time and post back with what I find!

Most likely the dust shield as thecole1098 said.

No need to remove a wheel, just reach underneath and pull it towards the center of the vehicle a bit, may need to do so in more than one place around the shield to achieve a similar buffer between it and the brake rotors. Luck. :cowboy:

It could also be the ware indicator on the brake pad rubbing the rotor telling you is time to change your brakes.

Brake dust shield hitting the rotor?

This happened to my old Jeep years ago. I was doing front end work and inadvertently bent the dust shield. After driving I heard the noise and figured that's what it must have been. Popped the wheel off and sure enough that was it. I just pried it back with a screwdriver.

Someone said wheel bearings.... in my past experience w/numerous other vehicles, wheel bearings have made more of a growling sound that can actually be felt a bit too.

Thanks a bunch! It was the brake dust sheild! I was changing the brakes and rotors while finding the problem, gave the sheild a few good whacks and now it's pretty smooth.
