'96 or '01?

i think it just depends on your financial situation and patience.

The 01 for $7500 is not a bad deal here in SoCal.

The 96' could have a lot of problems. 5 years is a big difference. That is 5 more years of driving, different owners, wear and tear, paint fade ect.

If you are will to spend $10k on a great trail truck I say get the 01' and upgrade the suspension and stereo.

If you only have $5k budget then get the 96 but be prepared to put more work into it.

Certain components will age independent of low mileage. This especially includes everything rubber on the truck like the ball joints and steering bushings.

96' hands down.

I love mine. You should find out if the rear suspension has been swapped for the dealer recall. You'll need the VIN and walk into the dealer. I did my front suspension with a code from advance and got new struts and springs for less than $200. Super easy to install.

Save the cash, do the work yourself. Drive it until the wheels fall off.

The 96's had some head gasket problems that the other years did not, although it isn't very common.

I'd much rather take the 96 if it were me.

That '01 looks way over priced. Even at $8K, I bet you can find something better on ebay or elsewhere.

Go with '96 you're familiar with and you have great excuse to replace suspension etc.

Agreed. I've lived in the Bay Area and NYC all while having a Seattle area code. What would make me nervous and cautious is the price.

One thing I would worry about is that if they had the 4runner in New York that it probably has some rust on it. I was looking at a really nice 2000 sport down in la but it had rust on the undercarriage cause it was originally from Utah so I passed on it. Good luck man
