i think it just depends on your financial situation and patience.
The 01 for $7500 is not a bad deal here in SoCal.
The 96' could have a lot of problems. 5 years is a big difference. That is 5 more years of driving, different owners, wear and tear, paint fade ect.
If you are will to spend $10k on a great trail truck I say get the 01' and upgrade the suspension and stereo.
If you only have $5k budget then get the 96 but be prepared to put more work into it.
Certain components will age independent of low mileage. This especially includes everything rubber on the truck like the ball joints and steering bushings.
