96 Tacoma .. Or a supercharger..

So I have the opportunity to purchase a 96 taco. Nooo rust!! 225 miles tho and I can feel the rear leaf springs are pretty toast. Shifts good engine (4cyl) seems to run well. Don't know if t-belts done. I can get it for about 1000 bucks. 2 new tires 2 old and a full size spare. Bodys beaten up and it has sliders.

Now a 2003 3.4L supercharger went up for sale somewhat locally. Still waiting to hear what parts it's missing but he agreed to 1300 bucks.

What do you guys think about my options and their prices

For that price personally i would grab that truck quick! two rides, another Toyota at that, bob the bed lift kit tires.. around here they dont come around that cheap! ever! plus if you put a small amount of money into the truck you could flip it for 1500-2000$ or even more

the 4cyl doesnt use a timing belt, it uses a chain. so dont worry about that.

The supercharger "kit" requires a LOT more than just the blower. Find out what he has with it.

Okay thanks guys. I took a look i swear I was looking at a belt on the taco. Here is the email I got from the owner of the supercharger.

Tech Knowledgebase - Installation Manual for TRD 3.4L V6 Supercharger

Go to Page 2... That's the list. If it's on the list and you don't have it, that's what you're missing. If all he's got is what's in the picture, you're missing pretty much everything.

Edit... just so this doesn't come across like I'm being an ass, the main things you need are:

1. Dynamic Tensioner & Hardware (you can get this separately, online for $275-300)
2. Longer Alternator Belt, which drives the S/C (about $20 @ any Toyota Dealer)
3. 1-Way Check Valve (this is IMPORTANT to have, prob have to buy from Toyota Dealer)
4. Hardware to bolt the S/C to the intake manifold
5. TRD "O" Shaped Throttle Body Gasket (about $15 @ any Toyota Dealer)

I can see the support spacer for the S/C in the picture (Listed as Spacer, Manifold Support Bracket in the manual)

I can see the bracket for the throttle/transmission kickdown cables in the picture (Listed as Bracket, Accelerator and Transmission Cable in the manual)

You can re-use the gasket on the intake manifold when you install the S/C, assuming it isn't torn up. The gasket between the upper and lower intake runners is the same as the gasket between the lower intake runner and the intake manifold, you can use either one, so if one is torn up you can use the other.

The rest is an assortment of vacuum fittings, hoses, and hardware. Given enough time and determination, you could peice it all together based on the list in the install manual.

Last but not least, that thing looks pretty oily on the bottom of the nose cone. If that nose cone is leaking, you'll need to replace/rebuild it. Replacements are about $300 for a kit.

I vote Taco! a 96 Taco for $1K!?! That seems like a steal, personally...

I would prefer it and then I would have a nice T4R and a beat up truck for rock crawling or plain hauling stuff around...

And we need photos of that Taco...

blagh damnit, taco is gone!! it was actually at my auction and an online guy bid me up .. and it died while leaving the building... literally.

So now my focus is on the supercharger.. i am not sure if it has the dynamic tensioner, just waiting for a response. As for the other stuff listed by bigfish - if he claims it comes with everything needed for install should i assume all of that is included? Im going to email him that list and see what he knows, thanks!

... still pissed about the taco, ill upload a pic of what i could have had tomorrow at work, but pff who needs two trucks anyway :|

Have the guy take a couple pics of everything included and post them here. That will be the easiest way for us to help determine if everything is included or what may be needed. The one way valve and throttle body gasket will most likely not come with it. People wouldn't usually take those off and include them.

I think I payed like $15 for both at my local dealer a couple months back and they were a next day item.

It also wouldn't be a bad idea to get the TRD SC oil change kit. It will come with new nose cone oil and a new coupler that connects the nose drive to the gear set inside the nose cone. These wear out over time and will cause the supercharger to sound like it has rocks rattling around in it. If you dont want to do the coupler, you can go to a GM dealer and get the SC oil for around $10-15. The TRD kit is around $55.

Either he didn't mean to type 2003 or he doesn't know what he has. Or he bought it on 03? Who knows.

Ask how many miles are on it. Check the nose cone for play if you go check out, it might need replacing. A new nose cone and the dynamic tensioner w/ the bracket will be like 500 bucks. Just keep extra parts $$ in mind!

Now that my rant is over, do it!!! If you have the cash. You will wonder why you ever drove a 4runner without a supercharger.

ya.. i love pickups, but my budget is too tight so as for the supercharger im just waiting to hear back but 1300 is the end of my budget so any extra parts will have to wait a few weeks so the S/C may sit colelcting dust for a few weeks. They are very uncommon here in canada so i thought id scoop it up. I have to take a 2 hour ferry to get it so it better still be there when i arrive :banana:.

You never know what people are thinking on craigslist. Mileage is low enough where the nose cone should be okay, and you probably don't even need to replace the oil in the nose cone (I think its recommended at 100k miles?). If the thing has been sitting replacing the oil isn't a bad idea. As long as the nose cone has no play it should be good to go. Mine sat around for a while before I installed it too, it's not a fun time looking at it on the work bench.

I had help doing mine - someone who had put a couple of these on, so he was pretty knowledgeable.That being said, its fairly straightforward. Try and keep the bolts you pull off organized and labelled and all that, that was my biggest problem. The instructions from TRD kind of stop randomly, but it includes hose routing diagrams which is good. Taking before pictures could help you keep track of the hose routing and stuff too.

Set aside a day to do it, start early and don't rush. Finding someone to help never hurts either. I was set on doing it myself because I figured install at a shop would be 500 bucks easily, and I didn't want to spend that.
