96 What Color Wires for High/Low Beam From Stalk

Could someone tell me what color the High and Low beam wires are coming off the headlight stalk for a 96? I'm going to tap into them to activate the relay for some auxiliary lights.

And it is only on-off, no high or low at the relayon a '96 non-DRL 4Runner.

You need a '96 EWD to be sure of the color at the stalk, and I only have a '99. But, since the stalk is the same, I know high is on Terminal 7 of the stalk plug and low is Terminal 17. The signal on each is GROUND, not 12V+. With a meter, you should be able to confirm what color they are. On a '99, low is Blue/black and high is red/yellow.

Are the terminals numbered if not how do I know what one is 7 and 17?
What does "Signal on each is ground" mean?
Does it mean I can not tap into the power wire because the "signal is ground"?
Would it not still have to have power going through the wire in order for it to send any kind of "signal to ground"
What meter do I need?
Can't I just use a test light?

What does "Signal on each is ground" mean? There are two ways to switch a relay on or off. A relay coil energizes when one side of the coil is grounded and the other is connected to battery positive. You can switch it on either side, or sometimes on both sides, but for different reasons.

Does it mean I can not tap into the power wire because the "signal is ground"? It means there is no power wire, only a ground wire, because that is how the stalk switch is wired. So the OTHER side of that relay coil must be connected to battery positive, not to ground. Then it will work fine. (AGAIN, this applies ONLY to non-DRL rigs. DRL 4Runners use switched hots for the headlights.)

Can't I just use a test light? Sure....connect one lead to battery positive because you are looking for a ground signal. Same goes for the meter.
