'97 4Runner Limited starting problem...

Every so often, once a week or so, when I turn the key nothing happens, dead. Will not turn over, nothing. Then, next time I turn the key only a minute later, it starts right up. Any idea what can be causing this? Battery terminals are new and in great shape. And nothing seems to be wrong, it runs great.

Thanks,
CD

That's common with the starter on the 3.4L engine. The contacts inside the starter wear out. The problem will get worse over time.

If you were to fix it yourself, the replacement parts are less than $50 at the dealer. Replace the contacts and the plunger.

Dealers won't take the starter apart and repair it, as their labor rate is so expensive that you might as well have them install a new starter.

I did this on my 97 (2wd 4cyl) and it was pretty straight forward.

Although, I remember reading that the 4wd is more of a challenge in regards to getting the starter out...

Do you have a factory alarm?
I had the exact same problem in my 98 SR5, but it turned out to be the factory alarm shorting out...tried 2 new starters, but the same prob kept happening again until the dealer diagnosed and disabled the alarm.
