97 4runner running lights stay on

I have a 97 4runner and the running lights won't turn off, dash lights stay on as well. Has anyone ever had this issue? Can't find much on diagrams, everything light related functions as it should except the running lights. Tried disconnecting the switch to see if it was shorting out in the switch but that didn't solve the issue. Any help would be appreciated.

Someone must have a schematic out there, but most probable cause could be:

(1)Relay contacts welded closed (stuck closed). Find FSM, find relay unplug it and see if problem goes away.
(2) If not (1), Short in taillight relay socket.

Relays click normal. tried removing bulbs to see if one would cause them to go out but no change

There are multiple relays involved. Don't go by the sound. Pull the "Head" relay out and see if the lights go out. If they do, then probe pin 3 on the socket and see if there's 12V there when turn the switch on and off. If the coil power is switching and they're staying on then the contacts are welded shut and the relay needs to be replaced. If the voltage isn't switching then it's something between the relay and the switch.

Are you using aftermarket headlights by any chance?

Don't trouble shoot the headlights. They have very little to do with the running(tail) lamps and dash light circuits.

Please check the 10A Taillight fuse in the main engine room fuse block to see if it has power with the light switch turned off. It most likely does!

Then check and remove the TAIL RELAY located in the same fuse block. If the lights go out, swap another relay to see if that is the problem. If they come back on with another relay, test Terminal 2 for that relay for ground. If it is grounded, report back and we can trouble shoot that.

Sorry, read that and though Daytime Running Lights instead of just park lights. You're correct.

OK the 10a taillight fuse has power with the switch off. Swapped the tail and efi relays and no change lights stay on I will get my meter from work tonight and check the ground to the relay, but there is power to the taillight relay

Good, the relay is hot with the key off at T1 and T5. T3 is out to the lights, T2 is ground.

That circuit runs through connector IG1 at the left kickpanel to the instrument cluster. If it is in fact grounded, start with the kick panel and try disconnecting IG1,(big 26 pin connector with lever release)if that doesn't off the lights, you have a short to ground in that wire between the fuse block and the kick panel. If it does, plug it back in and pull the instrument cluster and look for junction connector J5.

Well just pulled the kick panel and that whole connector has been removed and the wires but connected together :redbrick: all the wires there look in tact and not burnt though

Well that is awful!

You are going to have to identify the wire in question. Because your rig is a 97, the colors may not match the EWD I have.

In the 02 diagram, you'd be looking for RED with a GREEN stripe. And of course you could confirm the color by looking at the backside of the Relay block. If you are unsure which is T2, disconnect the battery, and pull the tail lamp fuse out. Then check for ground at the terminals, which ever one is grounded is T2.

Now back to the abortion, I mean butt connectors. Once you ABSOLUTELY identify the wire, cut it, and go back to the diagnostic procedure we discussed. Which is, if the light stays on, we have a short, if it goes out, we move to the junction connector behind the instrument cluster.

PS, when you ID the wire, make sure it is connected to the correct wire.

OK thank you for your help once again. I brought my power probe home from work tonight and started hunting around the taillight wire color is red with a white stripe on a 97 with no drl, ended up being rused through right at the fire wall

Awesome, well not awesome that you had that problem, awesome that you found it. Glad you were able to keep it simple. Next time call me before you buy any switches or relays mmmk? LOL

Haha will do electrical
Is definitely my weak point but my 5.3 swap in my 86 is helping take care of it. Luckily didn't buy any switches just one relay
