My 97 Runner runs rough, like stuttering, when asked to go full throttle. One mechanic replaced plugs/wires... better for 300 miles then gradually got worse again. Drove for 5000 miles with same problem and check engine light on. Dealer then diagnosed and replaced plugs/wires again. Better but not 100% and after 200 miles same problem creeping back in and engine light on. Dealer diagnosed plug#1 bad and replaced it. Now its better but still feel some of same stuttering at load, like in downshift for passing gear -- convinced its gonna get worse again. What the heck? injectors? Would something be fouling my plugs that quickly? thanks.

If it's still throwing a code then go to an auto parts store and have them pull the code. Then let us know what it is and we can probably help you out.

But this sounds like the symptoms you are describing.
Dealership on the hook for the diagnosing I presume. Does not sound like they are real sure....

If its a # 1 misfire code and it gets better after changing plugs then comes back, it sounds like a coil pack. Sometimes what happens is the plug will have a carbon track down the side of it causing a misfire. It will get better when you change the plug for awhile because the boot on the coil pack will just cause another carbon track down the new plug. Change out the coil and plug and you will bo ok. Sounds like you might need to change your mechanic too.....

After the dealer replacing spark plugs repeatedly, they did finally check the coil more closely and sure enough, that was the problem causing the rough running and then fouling the plugs. I think some dealer auto techs are too familiar with hookin up to diagnostics and dont think these things through. Anyway, many thanks for your input!
