97 FJ80 Dual Locked or 99 SR5 5speed w locker????

Let hear it guys.

I would have to ship the 4Runner but it is right down the street from James at the Truck Shop in San Diego so if he says it is good then that is gold to me.

The FJ80 is pretty local to me so I can put my hands on it. It is owned by a Toyota Enthusiast. Wife just wants a biggers SUV????? I guess that is not enough for her. Maint on the FJ is pretty much up to date but needs an EGR module. Big deal easy.


So what do you guys think?????

Talk some sense into me, I have a problem and I love Toyota's.

If you need to cross Africa, it's hard to beat a locked up 80. But it's bigger than the 4Runner, less powerful, worse mileage, and much more expensive to maintain. The drivetrain and suspension components are stouter, but they have to be because of the weight, and any wheeling advantage gained by the solid axle is offset by the size.

I think the 4Runner wins in any head to head outside of true safari/overland use. It's more economic, more nimble, more friendly on the street, and plenty stout enough to handle anything but the most hardcore of trails. But if practicality isn't a concern, the 80 is definitely sexier.

I'd choose the 4Runner for no other reason than the 5 Speed.

I had a '95 FZJ 80 with front and rear diff locks. My company vehicle because it had a GVWR over 6k lbs. Nice tax write-off.

A couple years later I got my personal use '97 V6, 5-speed, E-locker 4Runner.

I owned the 80 series for about 5 years. I sold it because it wasn't as comfortable, or as fun to drive as the 4Runner. I still have the 4Runner.

Well the 4Runner was looked at by James at the Truck Shop in San Diego. It checked out pretty darn good overall. Looks like it will need a rack and possibly a rear main seal but they tried pretty hard to hide it but HA, not getting past James. Crappy part is I will have to ship the 4Runner from SoCal to The Mid West.

I'm still going to look at the FJ this week.

Or do I just go all out and buy a crap ton of parts for the 99 limited, 35's duel locked and possibly triple sticks and just call that good.

Apparently I have been a good boy this year.

I wheel my 4Runner twice a month hehe,, on a good month :thumb: But i still say get the FJ as maybe their a little more rare, at least out this way they are. You really can't go wrong either way...

New Direction....

Well after consideration of all the choices and what I want to do and the wheeling and camping ect I do the choice was clear.

Well after much considerations and all the choices there was only one clear choice. I just wanted to say thank you for the member who sold his loved 3rd Gen fully SAS'ed to me. It went to a loved home and a all Toyota family . Thank you again for the extra parts also!
