'97 Limited - ass-dragging

- this has probably been asked/answered b4 but I can't seem to find the post -

I have a '97 Limited (love it!) and the thing that I want to change is the ass-dragging with any sort of load in the rear.

Three people, 2 dogs and a load of camping gear leaves u with very limited clearance on rear tires-to-fender bits.

I've hear spring spacers may be enough. I don't see call to lift it as most driving is highway.

Open to expert opinions! Thanks - MW

I believe Performance Products markets a spring kit for 3rd Gen 4Runners that is just rear replacements to solve the sagging problem.

If the truck rides fine with just one person, and only need to get rid of ass sag when loaded then grab your self some firestone air bags. Should only take about 2 hrs to install and they rock.

So now depending on your load you just air up to what you need to stay level. I put them on a few mounths ago and now regret not putting them on when I first bought the 4runner.

There is no need for any of the on board compresor, just route the hoses independed from each other to just behind the rear mud flaps where there is an existing whole. I think landed to your door it would be like 105.00 bucks.

Just buy the shocks and coils for the '99s and get a little lift but still stock ride and it'll cost ya' about $350+ shipping.

If your spending that much just buy some OME 881 up front and 906 in the rear with comfort shocks. Its 10 X better for the same price.

Sorry better yet just buy the coils (OME) coils and regular shocks of Ebay.

I second the air bags. Simple and easy. Even with the onboard compressor you will pay about $160. Probably less expensive and quicker than re-doing your springs.

You still should replace the coils even with an air system since the coils are shot if they are sagging bad and putting a band-aid on the problem isn't the way to go.

Great! Thanks for all the replies. At normal ride there's really not much droop so I think the air-bag option sounds best right now. I do have a tent-trailer that I'll tow occasionally and that would probably be adequate without spending a lot of $.

I found that installing springs can be triple the cost of the springs themselves (on my old '87 BMW anyway).

I had my suspension installed for a little over $150 or find some friend's that know their stuff since it's not too complicated with the right tools.
