We took her on her second long travel road trip from San Diego to Parump Nevada. We went to offer race support for out friend justin park. I used to co-drive for this truck but now I just organize pit crew personnel and tools, ect. I love wrenching so this is s fun for me for many different reasons.
We had no issues getting up and back, and was very surprised to see she's doing great with engine oil. She's right at the full mark on the stick before and after the trip witch was a very pleasant surprise.
New tires and rims completely removed all vibrations and we no longer are experiencing the shake at 75+
We decided to ad the lift spacers up front to give the old girl some new life after just hitting 236,xxx, you wouldn't know it. She loves the new preload on top of that tired spring because it's a pleasurable ride to say the least. A-arms are now sitting level and she tracks straight with a small adjustment needed to the steering but nothing to write home about, I just have OCD so if it's not perfect I notice it...ugh it's a curse.
Went ahead and recycled the old chrome dipped stock rims. Was shocked to learn that two of them weigh in at 47.2.
Plus your tire weight= To much rotational mass. I have noticed much better pick up with my 2015 Tacoma TRD wheels, not sure on thier weight but I don know they are significantly lighter.
Secondly; The offset on the 1997 stock 16" rim is 30mm positive offset and the 2015 TRD 16" wheels have a 28.5. this will be a problem if your running any tire larger than 265/75/16. You will need to get spacers to stop rubbing.
With all this new work we have things back where there supposed to be originally. We started with 245/70/16, witch is wrong for this truck in my opinion. This combined with shocks that have tired springs we were having big issuez because we couldn't align her until we either replaced the shocks and coils or added the spacer.
The spacer did a perfect job of correcting ride height and placing the proper preload once again to achieve the correct a arm position.......now we can try and align her up after I replace tierods and a ball joint or two.
To top it all off we used a black Friday to try new things. I went ahead and purchased all new dash LEDS to convert dash illumination color. Absolutely love it. Totally new like a new truck. Even did the key ring red hahaha once I did that I replaced all the panel fasteners around the entire vehicle. So no more rattling doors and windows.
Once that was completed I finished her off with a once over with Wipe New[emoji769]
I don't know if you have tried this stuff before but let me be first to say I love it! Stuff actually works really good and doesn't fade! Did the fender Wells and man what a difference!
We're almost completely finished with the restoration phase with just a few more parts to get:
New Carpet
New Headliner
New Steering Wheel
New Drivers Side Seat
New Drivers Side Visor
New Window Moulding & Rubber
New Seatbelts
New Plastic Panels in Rear
After that is time for:
Proper lift kit
Skid plate

A few more pics of the progress. She's just gonna need a new hood, and fender on one side before we paint.
I forgot to mention I also have a little over 1/3 of the fender trim rubbers that are impossible to find in decent condition? I do.....I will be moving on to the Moulding next week.

Some eye candy from my previous builds that keeps me inspired to continue building these awesome vehicles. Had to show off a little to nice not too! Just wanna do a real skid plate like I had on my ranger.
What ya I guys think?
Lastly I need help figuring out why my truck works perfectly I mean for trips to Tahoe and navada, with no thermostat. The second I add one she over heats! I'm a careful guy I do it the right way bleeding and all but stumped!
I tried a Toyota thermostat and no luck! We need the heat to Nevada and I couldn't run the thermostat so I removed the valve and spring. Made it into a restricter plate of sorts to slow but not stop flow enough to gain some warmer temps.
Need some ideas from the pros. And idea?

Going to install new door latches, and door closed sensors along with removing and painting the wind shield wiper arms and remaining emblems. We're gonna go full black out lol.
Slapping new fender runners on and removing the stock antenna finally. Sick of that noise.
Need a trans mine sounds like a grinder in the am not sure what's going on going to do a inspection here shortly.
Lastly the door locks are tweaking out so gotta address that too. Here we go!
Lastly sent the wife the Christmas list she's been waiting for hopefully I get some goods!

Happy holidays everyone!
We had a amazing time out in the desert this holiday weekend with the #$280project. We covered some 150+ miles in the dirt and sands of ocotillo SRVA and I surrounding areas.
We had a dirtbike and a bunch of other toys out there with us it was total mayhem road warrior and style! Aired down the tires and had a great time going up and down devil's slide with the kids in the back.
Had a bunch of guys jelaous of us in 2wd we were having no trouble going pretty much anywhere we wanted to while some guys with 4x4's who had no clue about airing down we're just sinking in the soft sand lol. All the weight from the SUV body and the 4:30 rear gearing ****ing kicked ass even with half bald BFGs.
Had so much fun we went a bit to hard and killed the front shocks completely. We're bouncing bad valving is gone on front drivers side completely, and the steering rack bushings are gone. We shook the disintegrated rubber right out of the rack mounts, and lower a arms. Ride hight is a solid 1/2" lower due to coil sag from excessive speed through the washes and choppy sand dunes from all the traffic out there.
We also killed what little support was left for the muffler she's cracked at the muffler inlet, and where it was welded before me by the ass hat that "fixed" the exaust.
Motor still perfect, started up again second crank Everytime, but the trans is going out for sure with her tasteful metal on metal sounds, and now accompanying a large bang when put into drive. We're just running this old trans into the ground with 337,xxx+ miles on her way she's a bad ass ***** to keep on going even after Baja 500 style driving for 4 days I am beyond impressed. Happy we made it home, yes my nails are gone from nervousness LOL!
So with all this being said we have decided that she's gonna get the full treatment since the wife decided it's ok lol. I was horny as a quarter horse taken after a stray when she told me that her dream car was a SAS conversation 3rd gen she had seen parked at the garage station in Ramona on the way home and I have to atmit it I'd be mine too but we all know how much work and $ that is, but she also fell in love with a white 5th gen on Kings and methods, with upper and lower total chaos arms and link kit so she I s now hooked. We got another 4runner junkie lol! I think I should gonna makr me jealous and get a 5th gen.....that's why I married her!
We are shot more rounds than I can count from the Mini 14, AR10 .308, AR15 .556, So&W .357, s&w .45 and I can say I'm in love with the AR10 .308. my next gun build will be just that.

Finally got under the truck and took a look for loose parts.
We found:
1.Missing trans cross member bolts (2 missing; 2 loose)
2. Completely Loose sway bar bushing mounts
3. Broken Exhaust Muffler hanger
4. Blown out sway bar link bushings
5. Worn driveahaft U joints (front & rear)
6. Loose exaust heat shields
7. Loose gas tank skid plate
8. Grill almost fell out was hanging on by 2 of the 6 tabs
9. Worn steering rack bushings
10. Damaged passenger side brake caliper hard line
11. Driver's side shock blown (oil leaking ect)
12. Worn passenger side lower BJ
We replaced all missing bolts and tightened everything in sight. It's almost like the whole truck can be fixed with a 14mm, 12mm or a 10mm. We effectively silenced all the rattles, and got her back to normal. The metals banging together from ocotillo was so bad we thought we were gonna loose a wheel lol! Not the case now, just started ordering parts with my gift card from Christmas. Budget build begins! #$280projectprerunner
