97 limited infinity stereo

Hello all. I am new here and recently picked up a 97 limited in great shape. I have searched and have had no luck finding any info on the sound system. The front doors have tweeters that say "infinity" I'm guessing like infinity kappa. Does anyone know where I can find the specs or general info about this sound system? Thanks

BUMP: I'm seeing lots of views but still no insight. Maybe I should deliniate the info I am looking for and why.

Being that my truck is a 97 the speakers are probably getting tired. I would like to keep this truck as original as possible because it is in immaculate condition. this will never be a "trail" rig; this will be my baby carrier/grocery getter with occasional camping / hunting trips.

The stock system is from my inferences an Infinity system

I would like to know how many watts the amp pushes?
What kind of speakers where used?
What type of speakers are used?
is there a sub?

I believe this is the "type 3" audio system as per the owner's manual.

any info with detailed specs is greatly appreciated

Dude the 4Runner never shipped with infinity speakers.

You have after market speakers from best buy or crutchfield etc.

BTW when properly powered the Kappas are great. I run them and IMO they are definitely at the top end of the consumer market.

What kind of head unit do you have? Is the factory unit because that would be well pretty hilarious.

Actually yes it is the stock head unit. Maybe that is why I haven't been able to find any information on this setup - it doesn't exist. If in fact these are just replacement speakers someone did a really good/clean install and I won't be fiddling with them anymore.

The catch is that without a proper amp and head unit they aren't very good at all.

Previous owner was smart enough to pull the after market deck and put the stock back in when selling.

Is the wiring stock? Taking apart the doors is super easy once you do it the first time.

For d decent sound with those kappa's get an head unit with 4V pre-outs and an alpine power pack ($150)

The stock head unit produces something like 7-10W RMS

After market stereo head unit will produce up to 22 W RMS x 4

The Powered Pack add on pushes it to 40W RMS x 4

Those Kappas need at least 40W RMS x 4 and 14G wiring would be a good idea as well.

PICS - Alpine Head Unit, Amp & Infinity Kappa's


Today I would like to talk about a few Stereo Mod's I've done. I put these speakers in over 2 years ago but last week I had my door panels off and thought I would take some pictures.

The panels are really easy to remove for anyone who hasn't done it before.

I needed a new stereo because my beloved 2003 Alpine MP3/CD Radio finally died last month. *It is pictured below

I ended up buying a really kick-@ss used Alpine MP3/CD Premium Head Unit on EBAY for $200. *It has a born on date of 2005

New Stereo Upgrade

1. Sound Deadening Mod - Roofing Material

2. Alpine Stereo CDA-9835

3. Infinity Kappa 6.5 Component Set

4. Alpine 75W RMS x 4 AMP

5. Ran new 14 (or 16g?) wires from the amp under the seat to all 4 doors (this is highly recommended by me)

Here is my new (used) Alpine 9835 MP3/CD Head Unit. I cannot stress enough how much of a difference the 4V pre-out, 109db signal to noise ratio and the TILT feature make this thing awesome. Bought on ebay for $109 + $99 for a new faceplate.

Wow thanks for the tips and pictures. This is actually one vehicle I want to keep as close to factory as possible. Removing the factory head unit is a no go for me at this point. I wouldn't mind however maybe installing some sort of amp between the speakers and head unit to push a bit better if I decide to add a subwoofer later down the line. I have 2 kicker 10" comps with a Kenwood amp sitting in my room but that's overkill.

Here is a picture of the tweeter with the logo which fooled me into thinking this truck was infinity equipped throughout.

As far as I know, there is no amp anywhere but I haven't taken any panels off yet.

The [aftermarket] amp if it exists would likely be:

* undernieth drivers seat
* passenger seat (less likely due to less room)
* inside the center dash, behind the large plastic trim piece that you have to remove to change the stereo. There is a lot of room in there for a super small amp like the alpine power pack.

I think your Prev owner simply pulled the amp and stereo but left the older kappas when he sold the car.

If it sounds fine then leave it. If you are interested in stereo upgrade options do a search using the link in my signature.

Don't know about the 97, but on mine, the amp was behind the head unit. I removed it when I replaced the head unit with one with an integrated amp and kept the stock speakers. It sounds better even with the stock speakers but I'm installing a sub today which should really improve things.

If you or anyone is interested, I still have the stock head unit and amp and they were both working fine, including backlighting, when I pulled them out.

Sorry I could have been clearer. I was referring to an aftermarket amp.

I don't remember the details of the factory amp. I pulled mine over 10 years ago.
