Dash Speaker for 2019 Limited

The dash speakers in my 2019 Limited are blown.

Does anyone have a recommendation for good replacement?

Requirements are primarily something that won't get blown again if I let it get a little too loud. After that, I'm obviously looking for good sound quality.

The Infinity REF307F seems to be popular on YouTube, but the videos have all been on SR5 models. I don't know if the JBL audio on the Limited makes a difference or not. My gut tells me it doesn't, but don't want to cause more problems than I already have.

Unfortunately the Limiteds with JBL use a different OHM rating than the non-JBL systems. Unless something has changed in the past year or three OEM is going to be your best bet

Anyone with info that contradicts what I’ve posted please share it and @ me while you’re at it!

So, I was able to find a pair of speakers, JBL GX328 3.5" Coaxial. These are 2.3 ohm speakers. They are also discontinued, so they are hard to find. I'm not sure if I found new old stock or counterfeits, but don't really care at this point.

I don't know that they sound any better than the stock speakers did originally, but they don't sound any worse, and they appear to have much better power handling capabilities, so hopefully I won't blow these.

One thing I would point out is that with the JBL system, you don't need the bass blocker since the amp has already filtered out the bass on those wires. I think he acknowledges that in the video comments.

I used the Red Wolf wiring harness available on Amazon.

It says it works for the Limited, but it needs some modification for the JBL system in the Limited. It is a good start, but you need to cut and switch the wires so the wide connector is on the positive feed and the narrow connector is on the negative feed. Per the diagram in the video, the positive feed is the outside wire under the "hump" and the negative feed is the wire next to it. The other two wires are not used, so I just snipped them off short and taped them.

I fabricated a bracket for the drivers side. On the passenger side, I had trouble fitting the speaker in due to the duct for the dash vents. I was able to turn on the defroster to heat up the plastic and then force the speaker into place. I just have the speaker secured with one bolt at this time. I'll see if I notice any rattles.

The other thing I'm debating is if I want to try to drill some extra holes in the covers to increase the size of the grill pattern since these speakers are larger then the stock speakers and part of them is projecting under solid plastic.

Thanks for the write up! I’m about to order these speakers, and just wanted to ask whether the harness is even necessary. It looks like all of have to do is swap the positive and negative connectors…

You could probably do it by cannibalizing the original wiring harness. I wanted to keep it intact.

According to the posted specs those are 4ohm speakers, although they do say they do have kits that work with JBL systems

I’m happy to report that the JBL GX328s are AWESOME! The wiring harness has been updated too so the large clip is already the positive connection- so this truly is plugs and play!

I didn’t make a second mounting bracket for the driver side either- though I will do so if it becomes necessary

I blew my dash speakers so long ago I forgot how good the JBL system even sounded and I am blown away! Best $82 I’ve spent on my truck since I bought it…

Yes you do. For a few bucks it makes the install process simple and quick! The old version of the harness needed to have the wires swapped but the new one is set up correctly as is…

(Note for future readers: the JBL GX 328 speakers seem to be no longer in production, however, online sellers still have listings showing "GX 328" but will send you a newer model. While the GX 328s are 2.3ohm, the new ones I got were both 3ohm. After a couple orders thinking I got the wrong item I figured this out and decided to try the 3ohn set. Seems ok, good sound, it worked.)

Just a moment...

I replaced the entire front end (door speakers too) w/ this 3-way component system by Focal - high end, French imp:. This is by far the best clarity you'll get out of practically any speaker in the market. I put the woofers in the doors, the mids in the tweeter slot and have the tweeters sitting next to the kids in the provided cases that Focal gives you with them. I run mine active with an external DSP and amp, but I'm sure they'd sound great using the the provided crossover. Pricey, but I 'm happy everyday I get in my 4Runner... which I have to sell btw
