That 30k engine is completely spotless... that's nuts that someone would pay $24k for an engine that will last up to 300k miles and beyond though. They think it's a collectors item or something?
 
Awesome. I might consider listing our mint condition 2002 Sport, Supercharged, 33s, Tundra brakes, transmission cooler, and no rust on there one day. 195k miles currently.

I was watching that because I just agreed to sell my equally nice (better in a few ways) 3rd gen to my friend for much, much, less. I haven't made the transaction yet but he's a good friend and I agreed to it so... lucky for him I guess.
 
Def makes me appreciate mine and what I paid that much more. Its def the collector crowd over there, but still nice to see and there are some amazing cars and knowledge on the site. There is a 04 Taco with 44K on it at 10K with 6 days to go.
 
Makes me LOL when I see another "cheap trail rig" thread where people bust out a sawzall to the fenders. I think people learned from previous generations of these trucks that guys like to hack them up and beat them on the trail until there's not many left. The XJ Cherokee market is a great example as well.
 
I got a steal then! 3300 bucks for my 97 limited with rear locker. It has 265K on the motor, and it runs strong.
 
I watched this one on BAT closely, 2.5 hours from me, but the bidding got crazy so I didn't jump in. I was a little nervous about this one as it had 2 new radiators and 2 trans drain/ fills in short order- worried about the pink milkshake deal but the driving videos look good and the owner said it shifted and drove fine.

I'm considering picking up a nice 3rd gen and driving it and giving my wife the 2011 4Runner. All black exterior, limited trim level is what I'm after but no rush, just daydreaming at this point. She's in a Chevy Trailblazer.

But yes these are bringing good money when in good shape with a solid service history, and little to no rust. Kind of makes the 4th gen 4Runner and GX-470 look like an interesting buy, at least to me anyways.

But these 3rd gens are sort of the perfect storm of style, function, and retro vibe.

I've seen several go recently on various fb groups, etc. for around 12k with 200k miles or more. Those were built ones, though. Seems like the market for these is pretty high in certain places, like Texas and Colorado.
 
Pretty big money for a stock high-ish mileage 3rd gen. I really hope the 3rd gen market doesn't start going crazy, and there are still so many of them I don't think they will for a while.

If something ever happens to mine I hope I can replace it for reasonable money. This was more of an anomaly I think.

Davis Auto Sports in VA has some amazing time capsule 4runners they sell thru Ebay that are pristine and usually go 10K and Up, Their archive of previous sold is like a museum of 3rd Gen 4runners, Some beautiful 3rd Gen 4runners to be seen.

I was tempted by the black one in current inventory but 11,900 was out of range,

Found my 2nd runner, a fantastic condition Desert Dune for 6500 , did 1500 in fixes and preventives and all is good.

The things you learn when your frame gives up the ghost after running great with an engine with a lot of sludge in it.
 
Wow, some of these are crazy! Hard to imagine 25k for a 3rd gen. I'm not sure I'd want one with such low miles, it's done a lot of sitting.

I have a lower mile one that has sat much more than my other two. It's the little details that count, and that one feels a lot nicer overall. For example, the gear lever just feels a lot tighter than the other two. I was actually switching on the headlights the other day and noticed how much tighter the switch feels. Yeah, maybe they are stupid little details that don't make a difference since the other two work perfectly fine anyway, but it just feels nicer. All these little things add up to the overall feel of the vehicle.

Davis always gets those 2002 Golden Pearl Limiteds. Definitely the classiest 3rd gen color combo. Their prices aren't far-fetched IMO. Right now we're in this unclear point where they sell for $1500 on Craigslist while another will sell for $15000 on BaT.

I remember your sludge thread. That's nothing. Fill it with Pennzoil synthetic and drive. It works amazingly well.
 
Wow, I'm thinking of selling the limited I bought 2 months ago and is still not running right. I can't do a new post yet cuz I just joined.

1998 Ltd that looked to be in decent shape. Ran into all these repairs:
. rear wheel bearings - man they are a bear to beat out of there
. diff side bearings
. still chasing a parasitic draw when parked
. rear hatch was slightly bent
. air filter was chewed thru
. timing belt, was nearly cracked thru
. new tires and shocks
. missing spare, had to buy a wheel
. power antenna
. front brakes sometimes decide to put themselves on
. needs a new driveline
. probably an alternator needed

I have $8k in it. Anybody want it? Central TX. Motor and trans sounds strong. White ext, brown int
