I have a 97 limited and the brake pedal is, at times, very stiff. It's similar to when the power booster goes out. I can get the brakes to work if I apply lots of pressure. Sometimes it feels like the pedal pushes back when I have it applied. The problem seems worse when it is cold. My house is on a hill and if I put it in reverse immediately after starting it the pedal goes right to the floor. If I move the car back and forth and pump the brakes constantly I can get the brakes to work. I've checked the front pads and rear shoes and they are nearly new. I live in Mexico and the temperature never gets below 60. There are no dealers near here but I have 40 years experience as a general mechanic.

I had almost the same problem. Mine turned out to be the booster, but it can also be the check valve, which is much cheaper. I tested mine with the check valve from a friends tacoma and got the same results, so I ordered a booster from [MENTION=78895]DeathCougar[/MENTION]. Shipped fast and install was easy. The dealer only wanted about 2000% what DC shipped it for.
