'98 4Runner Limited - $8900

hi, everybody...new to these forums...looking to get into a 4Runner and not sure where to start/what to look for

was looking at another thread here to get ideas when i saw this ad and got the idea to ask for help...hoping to get some feedback/input on this vehicle from more knowledgeable folks

Way too much - that's a $4500 truck. I bought an 02 Limited, one-owner, dealer-maintained with 144K miles (18 months ago) for $8000 from a dealer. I know prices are higher in Denver, but not twice as high. I'd keep looking, there are much better deals around, even in Colorado.

The dealer obviously doesn't want to put any money into it or he'd have replaced the front bumper.

pretty good history, right up to about 100k when that timing belt should be changed, there is nothing in there about that. kinda looked like the history mine had before I got it.

I think it is about 4k overpriced, but thats my opinion.

You guys are generous. Front bumper is pushed in too. I wouldn't pay more than about $3000 for that truck on a good day.

Bought my 98 limited 4x4 with 101K in Feb this year, paid $6K and I think that was too much...

You're right too much too much info to gather at once I wouldn't pay more than $4700 for it. Btw the dealer paid $3295 for it. If you decide to purchase work your way up from that your way up from that price.

Yeah, if you buy that, I have some property in Arizona I like to sell you. Just read on here and do your homework. Then you'll be successful in finding a quality 4runner at a reasonable price. Have patience and you might get a killer deal. Be quick and have cash.

Buying from a dealer or car lot means paying from $2500 to $4000 more for them adding basically a shine job and some black tire paint.
I paid $8K for mine('97, 119K miles, lived it's entire life in Tucson, AZ) from a private party here in Southern Cal. in an inflated market. It was intrinsically worth about $5500 to $6K.
I had looked at the listings for seven months, went and looked at three trucks:
One at a dealer(rust, driven by a college kid),
one at a local used lot(unknown maintainence and leaking),
one from a local private party(truck looked great, but aftermarket front axles with shredded boots plus horrible creaking leather seats). I hope you get what you want in less that seven months!

98Ozark had real world data.

Here is mine: 2000 Limited, 155K. Toyota dealer timing belt @115K. Factory rear locker. 3" OME suspension and 2" body lift. A few bumps and bruises from being used: $6900 Mpls MN

i'm in a dill of a pickle in that i have a car i need to get out of the loan cause the payment is killing the checkbook...it's a little upside down...i figure i'm gonna have to roll 1k-1500 into whatever else i get...which is why i'm looking at the low end on my first 4Runner

which is why i figure i will need to go through a dealer cause i can dump this other car, '07 Jetta Wolfsburg

i should try to sell it privately, but i'm not sure i'll get enough to cover the remaining loan...plus, i've never been much of a salesperson and would probably screw it up somehow

i am gonna take my time and not rush through this, at least try to take my time as rushing through a purchase is what has me in this situation in the first place...maybe i'll even figure out how i can sell my jetta to cover the loan

i really don't want to go through a dealer...we'll see how it goes

anyhow, i need to put some time into this site and see what i can learn so when i make my move i can get a good deal, etc

I got my '97 Limited in So Cal for $4900 with about the same miles as the one you looked at.

On a well-maintained 3rd gen that kind of mileage is nothing to worry about, if you take good care of one (assuming it's been well-cared-for before) you can expect an easy 300k+ at worst. Of course there will be some examples that don't last as long, but these are some of the toughest and most reliable vehicles ever built, by any automaker...at least in my opinion.
