98 4Runner Tailgate Handle Won't Engage

I'm having issues with my tailgate handle not engaging with the latch. I can hear the auto lock activating but for some reason, when unlocked, the handle will not open the tailgate. The handle itself is not jammed, I can still press it all the way, but for some reason it doesn't catch the latch.

The rear window is fully operable from the rear keyhole, although sometimes when manually using the key, it won't fully turn to the right, which keeps it from manually raising the window. With a few jiggles, I can then get it to raise the window.

I've read about taking the rear panel off from the inside and I've done that, which gives me access to the latch and open the tailgate (yay!) And with a few tests, I've noticed how the handle lever and latch lever are not connected, which I think is my issue.

Can anyone help me with the right fix? Seems like it could be a very simple nut and bolt. Thank you!

Pull the latch off the tailgate. There is a little "finger" type dealy that sweeps over to open the latch. If it's excessively worn, that's your culprit. Mine did the same thing.
