98 Frame rust

Just got call from my mechanic, rear left trailing arm and frame are about to break completely off. Took vehicle home and now trying to determine what next. Made the phone calls to no avail, should I repair or part out. Should I hold on to and hope for a buy out like the Tacomas? Any thoughts out their please chime in!!!!!

My brother's buddy just failed an otherwise super clean '96 Limited for the same thing. i think the person was going to try to get it plated/rewelded somewhere.

It's a real shame, but another lesson to those of us in Northern/salty climates on the importance of cleaning and undercoating the frames and undersides of our trucks!

Post some good pictures of the area. It may be repairable.

I wouldn't bet on Toyota offering a buyout/recall like the Tacoma, Tundra, and Sequoia. That was a problem with improperly made frames by an outside vendor (Dana Corp.).

My panhard bar axle mount broke in the same manner. I used a piece of scrap steel that I had laying around and made a new bracket. It wasn't near as hard as my mind made it out to be. Of course you need the right tools and a little know-how (or good internet advice), but you need to factor the value of the truck to you.

I had the exact same failure in 2013 on my 97. Paid a welder $1,100 to repair it.

Assuming that the rest off the vehicle is relatively clean and working fine I would get the frame patched and keep driving it.

A couple days ago, I was taking off the running boards on my 2001 Limited and reached around the frame and...crunch. There was about an inch wide band of rust running for about two feet inform of my lower rear control arm. Rusted clean through in spots. I found a local frame and axle shop that quoted me $750 to repair mine. They are going to weld in 3/16 steel and try to clean out the inside of the frame a bit. So maybe try a frame/axle shop as a repair option.

The frame guy recommended rustproofing/converter products from Eastwood. I haven't checked this out yet, but will be spending a lot of time under my 4r soon..
