'98 Fuel gauge question

I have a '98 limited v6 4x4 automatic. When the tank is full, the fuel gauge reads full. After about 60 miles on the tank, the needle starts to lose its damn mind.

Hit the gas, needle goes to full. Slow down or stop, needle goes to 1/2. Park on a slight incline, gauge goes to full. Park on a slight decline, gauge goes to 1/2.

After about 130 miles on the tank, the needle drops to empty (no fuel light) and will stay there until I refill no matter the [nose up/nose down] pitch of the truck.

When the gauge drops to empty and stays there, if I refill, I can put 8 gallons in the tank consistently. No biggie for me, but somewhat inconvenient when other people drive it.

Again, it's a 98 and thus not subject to the 99+ recalibration TSB.

Time to replace (or clean) the fuel sending unit? I've already cleaned the contacts at the harness.

Bump.

Just wanted to run this by folks so I'm not dropping the tank on my parts truck and my daily driver in vain.

Thanks.
