Just based on the rust I can see, I'd want to take a close look at the entire undercarriage, before buying.

By one picture you can see the rear fender has rust. To me it doesn't look well maintained. Is it rare, yes but could be a big big rare headache.

Yeah, that's my biggest concern. I've asked him twice about the undercarriage and he seems not to want to answer. And to make things worse I'm about 1200 miles away, so if have to take his word for it and fly up there... Might be worth passing on?

To me it looks used hard, and put away wet. The Highlander package is/was overrated anyway. Basically you got a fake hood scoop, and 1" taller springs, that have sagged by now anyway.

I'd look for a well taken care of V6, 4wd, 5-speed, E-locker equipped '96-'00 4Runner closer to home. That was a fairly common option package on 4Runners sold in Utah, back when these trucks were new on Dealer lots.

I'm in Utah. I see a lot of sports on the road, very few for sale.

Let me preface by saying I never stop looking for my next 3rd Gen. and I plan to travel a ways when I find it. Everyday I am on Craigslist. I am hoping my next one will be really close to this combo and low mileage but the rust is a deal breaker for me on this one and I am less than 3 hours away from it. Minnesota cars tend to be pretty rusty. Even compared to neighboring states and far rustier than anything down your way. Keep looking.:thumb:

Fly down south and buy something Rust free.

Stay away from that dealer. I have driven a couple subarus they have and multiple cars had oil lights on when I turned them on. They are one of the slimiest used dealers I've ever seen. A guy I work with bought a wrx wagon off of them and ended up having to almost get the cops involved to have them get the car running a day or two after he bought it. I know it can be tough to resist them because they have what seem to be some sweet cars at good prices (some turbo subabrus), but they are turning garbage cars and lying through their teeth to whoever stops in. I can't say that every car they have is junk, but I would not touch any of their cars without an intensely thorough inspection.

What makes it even harder to resist is the two sweet HILUX diesels he has in the garage there. One is the owner's personal truck and the other is a RHD in good shape. Other than that, be extremely careful if you go look at their cars.

If that were from a salt free state it would be worth that all day long, but the rust would probably keep me away too.
