99 4Runner Limited Alarm Problems?

Ok, so I have a 99 Limited and no key fob. I have a blinking security light on the center of the dash, but couldn't find an alarm button or black box anywhere. I just figured that the light was just a theft deterrent light or something. Anyway, I had it in for an inspection at the shop yesterday and now an alarm keeps going off randomly. It is usually 20 minutes or so after locking and leaving the vehicle and it does not disable the ignition or anything.

Could the shop have accidentally messed something up or triggered an alarm setting that is causing this? Also, since it is now apparent that there is some form of alarm hidden in my vehicle somewhere, does anyone know which model of alarm came on the '99 Limited? Would it be the RS3000?

Any info or suggestions that would help me find a starting point would be appreciated. The vehicle is going back into the shop on Thursday so I will be bringing it up with them if I cannot figure this out before then.

I asked at Toyota Stealership about factory alarms fro my 1998. I have a Toyota security red light rocker switch with a microphone inside it mounted to the transmission tunnel..and no remotes. I was toldToyota dealers used to sub out the alarm business to third party vendors until 2001. So there is a great chance you will start over like I am.
Unless you can find the brain to your alarm and get remotes for your particular one. I suggested finding the power lead and disconnecting it before disables you in a bad spot! Good Luck, my new simple viper will set anyone of us back $550.00 installed, cheaper than a deductible..hwell:

The RS3000 brains are under the drivers seat. You can use either the grey or black two button keyless remotes. FCC ID is BAB237137131-022. If you don't have the RS3000 user guide do a search. Hope this helps.

Look under the steering wheel bottom cover piece after removing the 4 bolts. That's where mine is and it's dealer installed, Code Alarm Mirage 9500 is mine.

Dragging this one up from the dead to add some new info for those that might run into a similar problem. It turns out that my alarm issues were caused by the contact arm on the hood latch switch/sensor (under the latching mechanism) getting slightly bent out of shape and not contacting solidly enough.

Once I cleaned the gunk out and gently bent the arm back to the proper place, the alarm issues went away.

To follow up on your original post, 99 limtteds have an OEM imobilizer and alarm. Dont ever loose your key, or always keep a spare. If you loose the key they cant make another one, not even at the dealer. You have to replaced the ECU. Ask me how I know.

Wow. Thanks for the info. I didn't realize that it was such a big deal to lose the key! If you have the key, presumably the dealer can make another though right? I should get a spare made just in case I do lose it.

If you have the master key you can get a key cut yourself and program it to your truck yourself. You know if your key is a master if it can start your truck, and open the doors, glove compartment, and rear window. If it only starts the truck it is only a Valet key, which in that case, you would need a new ECU. This is what my situation was on my 2000 limited, and I paid $300 for a new ECU at Toyota so I could get master keys. This may be different on you '98 however.

After getting the master key copied at any locksmith, use these instructions. Worked for me with keys I bought off of Ebay. Just saw you have a 99 not a 98 as I thought so you should be good to go.

1.Simultaneously depress and release brake and accelerator pedals 1 time.
2.Insert master key into ignition. Don't turn the key.
3.Within 15 seconds depress and release accelerator pedal 5 times.
4.Within 20 seconds depress and release the brake pedal 6 times and remove key.
5.Within 10 seconds insert new key into ignition.
6.Within 10 seconds depress and release the accelerator pedal 1 time.
7.After 80 seconds new key is registered and security light goes off.
8.Remove new key and depress and release brake pedal 1 time.
