99 Tall Coils or OME 3" Lift

Currently in the market for a new suspension, but having a hard time deciding. I want a more aggressive look, but still want a comfortable ride. Just bought new tires and not really wanting to change them out, will stock tires look funny? Any suggestions are a benefit, I just noticed that the price difference for both aren't very far apart and I hate wasting money.

What do you plan to do with your runner? Is it 4x4? Will you go offroad? I also did a rough price analysis and the 2 setups didn't seem to differ much in price (unless you buy used). I'm personally gonna go with the 3" OME setup...but I plan to take it off pavement. You can do a search to see stock tires on lifts. Personal preference really...

I'm in the same boat as you are. PO of my 4Runner, which I just recently bought, purchased brand new LT265/75/16s Toyo Open Country AT2s. Tires are awesome, and the size is what I strive for as I wouldn't want any bigger on stock gearing since MPG would see a significant decrease. My solution? OME 880 (1 1/2") & OME 906 (2") with OME shocks. Bumps up the suspension a few inches, which essence will give better clearance, as well as more aggressive look.

What tire size are you running?

If you want a comfortable ride forget OME. They are great off road but for on road driving you will be greatly disappointed. It is harsh and bumpy, makes the whole truck "bounce." I would look at 99 tall springs and go with an aftermarket shock, maybe bilstein, if you want 1". If you wanna spend a little more and go 1" or 2" higher, look at toytecs coilovers. Rickashay (I think is how you spell it), did a comparison of OME and tundra coilovers with bilsteins. You can search for the thread.
I have OME now. Gave me a 2 1/2" lift. I'm currently working on toytec adjustable coilovers and LC 8 wraps with 80 series shocks to replace it.

I suspect it comes down to personal preference but I love the OME on the Wifemobile. I don't find it too harsh on the road, and on the trail it's like butter. Soggier "comfort" suspensions don't do well when you're articulating, you'll think you're driving a bowl of jello.

If you decide to go with '99 coils though, send me a PM. I've got a set of front '99 highlander coils and coil spacers I want out of my garage, I'll let 'em go cheap.

I just finished gathering the pieces for my '99 highlander (tall) coils conversion on my '02 sport edition 2wd. I did a lot of research, and for me, this system made more sense than the OME stuff. I am not a wheeler, but a city driver who prefers the look of the taller suspension without sacrificing ride comfort. So I ordered the '99 coils from my local toyota dealership and got KYB shocks from summit racing. I also picked a couple of new top mount plates and a couple of toytec's 10mm rear spacers for a slight bit of take. Overall with shipping and tax I spent less than 700 bucks. This setup will give me 2" of lift (as the '02 is the lowest 3rd gen) and a stock feeling ride. All for less than the OME setup costs pre-shipping. Also, this setup does not require any modding of the panhard bar or CVs (if you have 4wd). I will be installing everything in a couple weeks so I'll be sure to post before and after pics and give my opinion on the ride quality when I get to it.

Btw, from everything I've read, the OME stuff is a very stiff, bouncy ride. To me, that doesn't sound like the kind of ride I want to be driving around town. If that's you, then I think you can't go wrong with the '99s

I will be real interested in this setup. I was leaning towards the Toytec coil overs, but if this will give me 2" on my 02, sounds like a good plan.

Currently I'm looking into the OME coils front and rear. Definitely going to buy the 5100 Billies for the front and 5125 Billies for the rear. I will 4 wheel a little, but don't mind the feel of a truck, if I wanted a smooth ride I would buy a Camry. The girlfriend is annoyed, but I've ran this vehicle stock for 9 years and I'm ready for a change. By the way I have a 2000 Toyota 4runner Highlander edition. After a lot of research I'm buying my shocks and coils on Friday.

My 4Runner came stock with the 99 talls so I went ahead and replaced the rear with OME 906s and their 60028 comfort shocks. Yes the ride is stiff but the look is amazing. I feel like the truck is more planted to the road now also. Havnt taken it offroading yet but I will!

Looks good I've decided to go with the OME 881/5100 Bilsteins in the front and the OME 890/ 5125 Bilsteins in the rear. Bought them Friday night and hope to get the truck in the air next Saturday. I will be sure to post pics next weekend, hope with all the snow as of late they can deliver everything by Friday!!! Thanks for all the suggestions and help!!

Did you end up getting the 2" of lift from this setup? I have an 02 so I'm curious.

I actually went with the OME/Bilstein set up and I have about 3" all around. It was more like 4" because my old springs and shocks were shot. It took me awhile to buy all the parts I needed. I went ahead and changed out my UBJ, LBJ, ITRE, OTRE, END LINKS FRONT AND REAR, STEERING RACK BUSINGS, AND SWAY BAR BUSHINGS. To say the least it was an undertaking that was a 3 day process, but I'm very happy with the outcome. Just purchased my SPIDERTRAX spacers over the weekend and still battling out what I'm going to do for tires. I really like the 285/75R16 Duratrac's, but I like driving my car everyday and I'm not going to get a commuter car.
