99 won't start, no click

Almost a year later...same problem. Never took to dealer but stopped by and asked toyota service guys and they had no idea. I have replaced starter relay...didn't help.
Still wont start when hot, when I pop open the hood it cools off quicker and will start within 15 min or so.
106 degrees the other day...truck was in shade and hadn't driven for 2 hrs...wouldn't start. Doesn't like the heat.
Any ideas?

Starter problem, solution
For the intermittent starter problem. always click but Start/won't start. Check the wire that engage the solenoid. I had this problem for few years and use turn the key on and off fast and it would start. Today it finally stop working completely. Click but don't turn. Like a bad battery but all the lights on the dash says on.
Here is the solution: Change the wire that goes from your fuse box to the solenoid. You know the little wire on the starter. Double the size and put a regular terminal and hook it to the pin at the starter with plenty of conductive grease. Fin a way to tie wrap the wire so it won't touch anything and pass it over the engine along the firewall right to the fuse box to the plug (4 cond) on the engine side. It's the plug for the wire to the solenoid. The bigger one. You can check it by removing the plug, the starter relay and check continuity. You can cut the wire or just cut the plastic and expose the wire to WELD "really important" the new wire and leave the original wire there. Isolate with electric tape and it's done. It will be better for your starter also, because the solenoid will engage promptly and forcefully preventing spark on the contacts, saving your starter. I would recommend that for any 4runner, problem or not. It's my second 4runner 2gen & 3gen and both did the same thing.

I know this is old ... but your solution seems like the answer to my problem but I am a visual person and your wurdage is is like a foreign language to me and leaves me even more confused ..haha. Help me understand please...

my guess is the contacts in the starter solenoid although he said he checked it out... i had no start issues for a while. i would just keep bumping the key until finally it would spin over. you can access all of it through the passenger side fender well

I had a weird issue similar to this with my truck. No warning, no click from the starter relay, just nothing when you turned the key. Turns out, I had a short in the little wire that grounds the negative battery terminal to the body. I replaced that and she fires up every time now.
Maybe this will be helpful to somebody else. Had this issue as well right after replacing my starter so I didn't think that could be the issue. Initially thought it was a bad relay in the fuse box under the hood. Jumpered the starter relay and managed to get it to turnover. (I believe there is a thread on how to do that somewhere here). Long story short ordered new relay and it didn't fix the issue. Turned out to be a blown fuse in the panel under the drivers side dash.
Replaced both battery cables and connectors...still didn't start.
Out of frustration I started pulling and beating on all the cables going to the battery and on the starter relay fuse...mysteriously it started working.
Weird!?

I've been through 4 starters on my 2005 4runner (150,000). I had the original which failed after 4 years rebuilt (contacts) by dealer shop and it failed in one year. They offered to rebuild again, but I bought them an AM starter new from Amazon and that one lasted 4 years.
Then I replaced that with a Quality Built Starter ($120) with lifetime warrantee.
My advice. Don't ever try rebuilding a Toyota starter (i.e., contacts for solenoid). Buy an AM one for $100 at Amazon.
The (S)dealer here in Nassau Bahamas told me they could get me a starter from Japan for $900. I bought my 4runner from them - new.

I recently had similar problem with 97Limited, 185,000 miles. Had it to dealer to look at alarm system (kill circuit) , that all was apparently OK, but it was still happening, just random no click//no start. It had a dealer installed new starter at 180,000 miles and ignition cylinder also replaced. I asked dealer to please just replace park/neutral switch which they didn't want to do, but it's been over a week now and it's been totally good so I think was actually the problem. Time will tell.
