A/C compressor rattle

My A/C compressor is making an intermittent rattle noise like a bad bearing sound. The weird thing is that it does it with the A/C off. Sometimes I will hear it when beside a wall at idle and if I turn the A/C on it will get a little louder or last longer before it quiets down. I'm thinking it's the pulley/bearing since it does it when the A/C is off too. Can that bearing be replaced without replacing the whole compressor? The A/C still blows cold.

Thanks!

I doubt the bearing can be replaced. You'd have to change all the bearings since they're likely near the same condition. It sounds like the clutch assembly is the main problem. It's better to source a different compressor.
