A/C Issue

So, I have been using this site for a while, but this is the first time I am posting in the thread section. I have a 1996 4runner. It does not have the automatic controls, and actually came with the lever a/c controls.

So, getting to my problem. My a/c compressor always runs. It doe not matter what the fan setting or whether the a/c button is pushed. It can be 100 degrees outside without the ac button on and it will still blow cold air.

Any ideas what could be causing this? Is the magnetic clutch on the front of the a/c stuck engaged? I found a knob a/c control from a 1997 or 1998 t4r in a junk yard and I replaced my lever controls and it did not make any difference.

I do not have any a/c fixing experience, and I know that these fixes can be expensive, so I would like to have an idea of what it is going in.

Have you checked the switch to see if it is shorted closed?

Bump....my A/C runs all the time. FAN, NO FAN, A/C button on/off. Rain, shine, snow, hurricanes.....it's always running. I would like to know why as well. Subscribed....

I found a second a/c switch too both do the same thing... although its not new, it doesnt seem to make a difference.

Does the 96 have the digital LCD display for climate control? Mine is a 2000 and it's digital. I would hope that it isn't something screwed up on the circuit board.

Seems like something is stuck closed like a switch or relay. Or maybe a shorted wire.

Just use a flat screwdriver and pull the AC switch. It will come right out without removing any other knobs or front panel. See what happens to the AC.

It is strange how air comes out from the vents when the blower motor is not running. Do you have the fresh-air open (or stuck open)?

Im able to remove the A/C button quite easily when removing the front dash panel. It makes no difference for me. Still super ice cold.

See if you can disconnect the wire going to the compressor clutch. I think it may feed to a connector you can open.

Try what Duke said. If it still spins the compressor clutch try below:

Do you have access to compressor? Blow some pressurized air between the AC pulley and clutch. Could be something stuck there and spin the compressor. The best would be to remove the 10 mm bolt and bolt a 12 mm bolt to the clutch to pull out the clutch. Pay attention to the washer that comes out (or can be inside the compressor unit). Did you by the way removed the AC clutch before and didn't install the washer?

Any possibility the air flow selector is stuck in the defrost position or the defrost switch is stuck in the on position? Defrost overrides the normal a/c switches.

AC is used for window defrost even if you dont have button pushed

is the actual compressor spinning or just the outside pully?

My first idea is that your selection is on ''defrost'' which overides A/C to on.

Also, I have seen on my truck that when the A/C is not running, the clutch sticks a little bit, the A/C compressor turns a tiny little bit even off. Would that be possible for these clutches to stick and stay on even when de-energized?
