A/C not working

Have an 03 T4R sport... about two or three months ago I removed the alternator and compressor to change out my tensioner pulley that wasn't working and kept squeaking. Everything worked out. Now that it's summer I realized my A/C isn't working and it worked all summer long last year. Was thinking of just recharging it buuuut... I know there's a proper way with an AC manifold gauge and a vacuum pump. I don't have these tools. Do you think just recharging it with some refrigerant would be ok instead of doing it the "proper" way? If I have to go to a shop how much is a fair price for that kind of work?

All that is worthless if you don't know what the problem is. Could be anything and may or may not be related to the work you did prior. This happened on my 05 a few years back and it turned out it was a bad condensor. Take it to a shop for a diagnosis first. It's impossible to diagnose this over the Internet.

Is the A/C light on the control panel flashing or solid? If it's flashing, could be as simple as the A/C relay in the underhood fuse/relay box. If it's on solid and not working, then it's a bigger problem because the system "thinks" it is working, thus the solid light.

My a/c condenser/compressor is done. Quoted around $1500 to get everything fixed including the recharge which is about $100. Would be easiest to take it to an a/c shop and have them do an inspection on your system. Mine cost about $100 for the diagnosis and they told me what is wrong and the cost of it to be fixed.

Yah true. I asked my mechanic how much he would do it for and he said around $900 or so. So I'm probably going to go get him to do it for me instead

A/C light is solid :/ might just need a recharge. Taking it to my mechanic on Wednesday and I'll let you guys know what he tells me.

curious about this too. im planning on having it inspected or recharged when i get my next oil change in a month or so! 1k - 2k for AC system is BS...cant stand repairs that cost about 30% of what i paid for entire vehicle.

Hi everywhere I look about this issue (AC blinking light) the fix seems to be the relay.

Well the relay i have in my 06 4runner IS the "newer" one that is supposed to replace the faulty one. I have also tried using the similar relays in the box in place of it with no success.

It worked last summer, but over time it got intermitent. I have to press the AC light on and off and hope the AC will kick on. Then eventually it stopped. I had pressure checked and it good.

What else can I do to check? I was told to wire 12v to the clutch and see if it works. But the space is so small in there I cant do anything to the pins on the clutch. Is there a wire somewhere downstream I can apply 12v to where i have more space?
