Doesn't work... all my recent Toyotas, 2004-2006, the AC is on when the defrost is selected, whether it's windshield only or floor and windshield. Only my 4Runner has auto climate control. The other two have manual systems. Try it on a warm or hot day to test it out. The air is cool/cold.

yes it is. the compressor on with the defrost is also suppose to clear the window faster. i spent alot of time last night til i was baty trying to find a DIY switch mod for it, not for me but for anyone who might want it. personally, the ac cycling with the defroster in the winter dosent bother me, now the way the AUTO works for the ac in the summer is another story, as a result i set the temp to LO & havent used the AUTO function for years.

I'm not sure. I would suspect, it would be weather dependent. If left in Auto when it's colder, the compressor will come on less than hot days. I can't tell in my Camry, but my '05 Tacoma (manual climate controls) the AC compressor cycles and does not stay on constantly, as evident by the feeling of being hit from behind when at a stop and the brakes are lightly held, when the compressor cycles.
I believe you're right and read when outside temp is below a certain point, the AC will not run to protect the lines from freezing due the low ambient temp.
Toyota just needs to give us a full manual mode with the climate controls. This is where Honda's implementation is better. The AC comes out automatically when defrost is selected, but another press of the AC button turns it off. Also, Honda links the wiper speed to the speed sensor, so the wipers slow down at a complete stop even when it's on low or fast speed. But that's another thread.
I should go take a look at the FSM.
Thats why it rev's up when you're at a stop?? I was wondering what the hell that is. In my 4R, I've been at a stop and had my foot lightly on the brake feel the car creep forward. I can see its rev'ing about 750-800 in drive while it usually sits about 550-600 at running temp in drive. It last about 5-8 seconds and goes back to a lower idle. Are you saying this cycle happens even when defrost is off?
My parents have a '07 Camry with a 4cyl and I noticed (on a cold start....in Central CA) that it wants to lower the revs as it warms up but it will (seemingly) catch itself and rev back up. I figured it was the ECU telling the motor to rev up more. Kinda like it was the IAT sensor or something going haywire. But you are making me think about the A/C cycle now.
