I have a 2005 4runner V6 . My a/c light is flashing and no, it's not the freon and it is not the mc relay as I swapped relays with the fog light relay and it still does the same thing and when I put the mc relay in the fog light spot , the lights work. So it's not the relay (which I hoped it would be because it's such an easy fix) When I turn on the ac , it will come on for exactly 5 seconds with cold air, then light starts blinking. Compressor does come on but shuts down when light starts blinking so I assume that computer is telling compressor to shut down. I was told that it is probably the rpm speed sensor causing this. Also I was told that there are 2 types of compressors , 1 has this sensor internally (which means replacing compressor) and 1 is external. I can't get a straight answer from dealer on where to look for the sensor on my 4runner (they want me to take it in of course) and diagrams don't tell me much either. Anybody come across this or know where to look for this sensor? Or any other thoughts?

Take it to the dealer since it should be covered under the TSB.

"Toyota has issued a service bulletin for this condition(TSB EL011-05) it involves replacing the A/C magnetic clutch relay, locate the relay and check the part number, if it is 90987-02022 replace it with 90987-02028, contact the toyota dealer because this may still be covered under the factory warranty. "
The relay that came with the car and is faulty is part number 90987-02022 and is white in color.
It is supposed to be replaced by the newer relay part number 90987-02028 and is grey in color.
This relay is found in the fuse box under the hood marked as "MG CLT". "MG CLT" is short for Magnetic Clutch.

Thanks for the reply , but I've already checked the relay and it does have the proper one and I did swap it with another and it still didn't fix it. All signs are pointing to RPM sensor inside the compressor. Looks like I'll have to break down and replace compressor. :sad: I'll post whether it was the problem or not.

So there are a lot of things that can cause the a/c light to flash on those systems. If it is an automatic climate control system, the control head, cabin temp sensors, HVAC door actuators, clutch cycle switch etc etc could cause the HVAC controller to throw a code and shut the compressor off.
There is a good chance that the refrigerant pressures are getting too high and the HVAC controller is trying to avoid compressor damage by shutting it down. You cant tell if that is the case though if you dont have a set of gauges.
Check the condensor to see if it is possibly plugged up, its in front of your radiator, also make sure the radiator isnt plugged. I have seen condensors that are clear and radiators that are almost plugged solid cause an AC system to not cool after about 20 seconds of running.
If you feel like you have exhausted your efforts then taking it to a trusted shop would be the best fix.

Update
Update: Finally broke down and replaced compressor. Had it recharged and now I have cold air again! Although it probably wasn't the compressor itself but the rpm sensor that is internally in the compressor. And the only way to fix it is to replace the whole thing
but just happy its working again!
