A couple of running board questions ...

I'm pondering the purchase of a '14 LE ....

1. Anybody bought the automatic RBs? Thoughts? Especially if you've had them through a winter - I sure can see them getting all snotted up and stuck.

2. What is it that prevents the TE RBs from being installed on the LE? I know I've read this but cannot find it. Is it the XREAS lines?

3. Any suggestions on options for me? I really like the look of the '14 TE RBs ("Rigids")

are you talking about the regular running boards or the rigid running boards. there is a difference in the order code for each.

R6 is the regular running boards that has a chrome strip.

KH is the rigid running boards that is all black.


i should have gotten the KH version, i like the look of those better than the R6 ones.

Well, I finally have company lols. I want the Trailer RBs on my SR5. heres something that may help you. google images for running boards 4runner 2014, and youll notice all-black RBs on SR5s.not sure if this is the same as the trailer RBs...I have not looked closely at the all-black RBs on the limiteds - in google images. Let me know what you find on your end....This is what i found so far in my queries:

I'll head out to my local dealer soon and ask if i can take a look at the trail RBs that they claim to have in stock if its really the 2014 trail RBs then ask them whats their return policy in case it wont fit on my SR5

#1, no idea, not cool enough to have em

#2, I think the TE RBs wont clear the LE's lower hanging rocker panels...it has nothing to do with the XREAS lines because those are on the frame rail, and the factory RBs mount to the underside of the body.

#3, get a '14 LE and do the TE conversion on the side rocker panels, lol.

I've got the standard RBs on a '13 SR5 and I can tell you they seem so "tucked in" to the sides that you really have to focus to get a big boot on them.
The automatics look cool but (I could be a skeptic) the first thing I think of when i see something like that is "how much will those cost to fix if they break down some day after warranty is expired....?" ....but they are cool...

lols, I guess it is possible that the XREAS lines or cylinder sticks out so far from the frame rail that it could hit the mounting brackets?

Go look under your current SR5 side rocker panels, and you should see I think 3 brackets with 1-2 bolts each holding the rocker trim to the body...I believe this is where the factory running boards bolt to also. Looks kinda far to me?

I doesn't seem like it would interfere since the bolt holes under the body look so far away from the frame rails, but I can't say for sure. It was just an educated guess

So I picked up my 4Runner off the lot last night. Typically I prefer to special order vehicles to ensure that I get exactly what I want, but there happened to be a black SR5 Premium 4x4 with Sand Beige interior & 3rd row seating a couple blocks from my house, so I figured what the hell. The only other options I would have gotten were I ordering were running boards, roof rack crossbars, & maybe all weather mats. I figured I could just go to the accessory catalog after the fact.

Unfortunately, there is a small wrinkle. The running boards I want are the so-called "rigid running boards" (option code KH). The ones in the accessory catalog are just called "running boards" (option code RB). By now I'm sure you've referred to the pictures in this thread and know the difference. The thing is, the KH running boards are a dealer/port-installed option, & I'm being told that they can't be retrofitted. This is annoying, because surely they come in a kit and are sitting in a big pile either at the receiving center if not the dealer itself. Has anyone had any luck ordering these AFTER taking delivery of their 4Runner?

we are exactly in the same boat. I emailed 5 southern california dealers, and only one responded, and Im suspecting the quote he gave me was for a pre-2014 RB. hopefully soon, i'll go to that dealer and see with my own eyes if its really the 'KH' version,

My gosh, Phil, about time you got off the fence on the 14. Good to hear.
I've enjoyed power RB's and, at first, thought they were for silly old men. How quickly I came to appreciate them, even if they did accumulate dirt.
Some of them (not sure about the 4R's) drop down, and out, with the opening of the driver's door, so they can give your shin a smack if you're not paying attention — you know, if that busty blond from down the street is walking past as you happen to be getting into the truck.

FWIW, Budbuilt sliders (an option over the RBs) say the LE requires a different rocker panel.

Heh, I'm far from off the fence. Right now I'm just scratching an itch. I haven't a need in the world. My '10 only has 30K on it, and I have everything right (tires, shocks, HIDs). A new LE will have to have some 'adjustments' too (TRD wheels/tires, lights) ... so I'm pondering it all.

I too, would want the "rigid" RBs, but they show as N/A for LE on Toy.com. There must be a reason.
I'm afraid of the power RBs, living in the salt/slush/snow belt, plus they're too pricey.

Maybe I should just get the TE - that would solve the RB issue, eh?

Ugh, I am having a very very bad typing day today, ZERO eloquence on my part. Let me try one more time, lol.

XREAS clearance notwithstanding, the side skirts on the 2014 LE hang way too low to clear the tighter hugging TE running boards. This is the same issue that all the guys here have when they want to use sliders/N-fabs made for a TE on their 10'-13' SR5/LE. They either need to trim the heck out of their side skirts or just remove them all together; whereas on the TEs you can install them with no problem.

If you compare stock photos of each running board, you will notice that the LE running boards hang a lot lower compared to the TE ones. This is because you need that much extra downward space to clear the LE side skirts.

Sooo, I stand by my hunch that at the very least you're going to have to change the LE side skirts to the new SR5/TE ones in order to clear the running boards that you like.

So yes if you are really partial to those new TE rigid running boards I'd say get the TE right off the bat. I mean you know you secretly want that badass hood scoop anyways right?

Ooooh, those white 14 TEs do look good. But you're right, would need a lift, HID conversion, tires. Better take the back scratcher down to the dealership.

New? those are the same running boards that came on my 11 Trail....

if the boards detect resistence, they will fail to extend or retract and you will get a nice little light on the dash to indicate a malfunction.

failure to extend wouldnt be a big issue, the retract issue might be since they extend down and out much more than the rigid ones.
