A few aftermarket stereo questions- 2013 Trail

2013 Trail with base stereo (non-JBL, no nav)

Getting ready to order and had a few questions. I've spent all morning searching on here and got alot of good info but still have a few questions:

I'm going with a Kenwood Excelon DNX6990HD. From what I've read on here, you guys seem to prefer the Axxess ASWC over the PAC unit. However, neither of their websites can confirm that they work on a 2013. Has anyone had experience with using the Axxess on a '13?

Also, I plan to have the backup camera show on the Kenwood via the factory video feed. I know it's been done, but can anyone show me a tutorial or details of how it's done?

I would look at http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/61082-aftermarket-stereo.html to see about the back up camera feed. The thread is about 25 pages long and there is a lot of info there.

As far as the Axxess working on the '13 I am not sure, but I do not that most people use that instead of the PAC. Good Luck.

93, somewhere, someone, I think it was Harper7, stated that it all really comes down to what interface you like. Each major player (Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine, etc) has a different mapping vendor (Tom Tom, Garmin, etc) that different people like for different reasons. All of the upper end units have most of the same features but some lean one way or the other when it comes to things like XM/Sirius, mapping, and what options are available (iphone cables, etc).

Whiskey, I read something to that effect last night. Someone said it all came down to interface and each manufacturers strong/weak points. One may have easier iPod function, but is weaker when it comes to Bluetooth functionality. Then another manufacturer is just the opposite. I guess I'll just have to go with my gut and pull the trigger at some point.

Bad thing is when you read the reviews on any of them. Because you'll see 10 people who LOVE brand X, then one person posts a review and they had three bad units before they got a good one! Or you read about another brand with alot of good reviews and then you hit one where the unit randomly switched stations or changed input device! I guess I'll read a little more, then place an order.

I have the Kenwood DNX7190HD and could not be happier with it....popped in an Alpine overhead monitor as well....no problems with either .

I am glad that you are actually reading the reviews and not just looking at the overall score which can be misleading. And, I would read reviews at car audio related sites and forums (Crutchfield), not just Amazon. I don't know how many times I have read a review where some idiot gives an item one star but then states something like "I really love this product. It is so Awesome! I gave it one star because the package was torn (or, because it arrived one day later than expected)"

I don't even own a Bluetooth enabled phone - so I'm not sure how the Bluetooth portions work (would also depend on the radio - but I believe my Alpine has its own Bluetooth interface).

I do know I'm using some of the buttons on the right side of the steering wheel for different purposes (programmed for different functions during the initial PAC programming setup procedure) - one of the "Phone" buttons is used as a "Play/Pause" button - works as programmed.

You can also see how I avoided cutting the factory radio harness (for the Steering Wheel wires) by using a Computer's 3-Pin ATX Fan Connector here.

No problem. Sweet Avatar Pic BTW! I have an old '87 T4R 4x4 in storage awaiting a complete restoration and V8 conversion. Might be another 10 years before I get to it!

It does seem that the PAC SWI-RC does have provisions for programming the Bluetooth controls for Alpine radios - but they seem to be omitted when the SWI-RC is in "Kenwood" mode (I do see an "Answer" function though)...

Go figure. I'm also using the PAC TR7 Alpine Video Bypass module (works like a charm) - so I figured I'd stick with the PAC SWI-RC as well - but the Axxess ASWC might be more flexible overall?

I've had the AVIC-Z120BH which is the Z140's predecessor for 2 1/2 years and it still works the same as the day I bought it and use it daily.It was very easy to hack so all the features work while driving which was important to me.They are Apple friendly and the interface is very ipod/ipad like and I do have a 160gb Ipod classic with all my music on it at the touch and swipe of my fingers plugged into it. Pioneer does use Tomtom nav software which I'm not fond of however.It's a little better the the OEM JBL navs tomtom software but not much.

If I had it to do over again now I wouldn't even get a built in nav at all as my Galaxy Note 2 and most modern smart phones have turn by turn nav that blows it away anyways and is constantly updated.Apps and Nav apps like Garmin street pilot streamed from your phone to the DVD/Reciever are the future anyways since phones have GPS.There is or will be an app for that!lolI did just use my trusty Garmin when going on long trips out in the middle of nowhere the last few years which is hard to beat too IMO but with phone nav so good now it will probably stay in the glove box this year.

If I was buying now,especially if I had an iPhone which I don't but my 2 daughters do, it would just be a 7 inch DVD receiver like the AVH-P8400BH
or the.......Kenwood - DDX719
They can be had for less then $500. I wish they would just make one with an HDMI and USB in so I could plug my phone and hard drives in and go from there....but that's probably next year.lol
I'm not up on the Alpines or others out there and always bought Kenwoods or Pioneers myself.

Research,read reviews and then go to a car audio store and play with them and get the low down from the peeps that work there to see what's best for you is still the BEST way!
