A few questions about 1st gens

Hey guys, my dad is looking at an 86 T4R and asked me if he should get it. But my little bit of 3rd gen knowledge does nothing to help. So I turn to you guys.

The facts that I know:
1986 T4R 4X4.
2.4L, blown head gasket (Is that a big problem on these like the 95 V6 he had before?)
Auto
Some body damage (duh its 25 years old)
A few rust spots
The guy is asking $600 FIRM

So basicly, I want to know about the head gasket issues and if it would be a bigger issue like the 2nd gen V6's.

the 22re is arguably the most over engineered engine toyota made that is still cheap and obtainable.

As far as I know, I'm still cruisin on my 2nd headgasket and the first one lasted like 200,000 miles or some huge number.
That's the engine to get.

I don't know anything about the Auto

But it's relatively cheap to rebuild the engine if there is more damage, and 600 bucks doesn't seem too bad. That's speaking without actually seeing the damage.

I actually know the milage, (it's less than my 3rd gen, lol) 165K

And the damage is nothing to be worried about. Just a small dent on the front of the drivers door. He only wants it to save on gas, It has to be better on gas than his V8 dodge on 33s'.

Also it's an SR5.
 
Seems like for $600, it is a no brainer to me. Providing he is replacing the gasket or having a friend help. Not a lot of money for a super reliable rig.
It will make an awesome Beater truck.

I think the same thing. But about a year ago he bought a 95 V6 for $800 and replaced the head gasket 4 times and it still blew up. So he just wanted to make sure it wasn't a common problem like the 95 had.

The 2.4 doesn't have the same head gasket issues as the 3.slow. The weak spot in the 22re (it is fuel injected, right? If not it's a 22r) is the timing chain - the guides fall apart, and then the chain wears a hole in the cover and he gets a milkshake in his radiator. Regular scheduled maintenance and/or beefier time chain guides are necessary. It's worth finding out the last time it was done, and then as long as he's got the head off maybe doing it again anyway. Lots of guys upgrade the chain guides and install dual-row chains while they're in there.

That's really the only achilles heel to the 22re though, it's nearly bulletproof in all other respects. That slushbox will suck a lot of power, but it's fairly reliable as well.

With that mileage, $600 is a steal, tell him to jump on it.

Actually bad HG's is a common problem for the 2.4, just not as bad nor widely publicized as the 3.0 V6's HG problem.

Be sure to check the frame for rust, a very bad problem on 80's Toy trucks (unless you are in the SW USA).

They rust from the inside out so you don't notice until it's really bad.

If that's all good, $600 for a non-running 1st gen is reasonable.

That is what I was waiting to hear.

Even though around here, rust isn't really a problem at all, with it having some body rust, I'm guessing the frame is probably pretty bad too, I haven't seen it in person. I will let you guys know if he picks it up or not.
