A little help with fuse locations?

Okay, I'm hoping I just blew a fuse, but the owner's manual is not at all helpful in determining what each fuse relates to.

I was screwing around with my Navigation system again, plugging in a microphone, and after I got everything back together the 'check engine' light and the "VSC OFF" lights were on in the dash. Also, my cruise control won't work - the cruise light comes on but after setting a speed the cruise system won't even attempt to operate.

So, either I blew a fuse, or else I knocked some pretty serious wires loose while mucking around inside the dash.

Anyone got ideas?

First things first, specs of the vehical, year ect. As well as whats aftermarket as far as electronics.

2006 Limited. The only extra electronics are the Solara Nav unit I just plugged in.

Ok go to your local Autozone store and get the code off that Check Engine light. Its free there, so dont go to the dealership. (Unless you like spending lots of money for no reason) Also VSC is vehical stability control right?? (My Toyotas don't have it :driving: ) If it is, thats probly why your check engine light is on. This nav unit is it mounted where the factory radio was or is it a windshield mount?

The Owners manual is bad when it comes to fuses. I am guessing the the back side of the fuse panal cover, has info for each fuse? That's where I would start. There are also a couple of spare fuses in the panel under the hood.

There simply is no fuse information available. The back cover of the fuse box tells the amperages of the fuses (just in case your replacement fuses don't print the amperages right on their face, I guess), but not what those fuses run.

Phil, thanks for the tip on the check engine light check at Autozone. I doubt that it will tell me anything since this is obviously an electrical problem, but its worth a shot. My best bet is probably just checking all the fuses, one by one.

Since you probably haven't been reading every single thread in this forum, I recently replaced my factory radio unit with a Solara Navigation unit. It is plug and play right there in the dash. It worked perfect for two weeks, but I took it out again this weekend to add a microphone and to tap into the reverse wire.

At first I tapped into the wrong wire, and I think that is where I either blew a fuse or possibly pulled something loose. I just wanted to check out the fuses before I started panicking over loose wires.

You could be right about the fuse check them all! But before that my advice would be to put everything back how it was before the problems started. Then check all the fuses because it will keep blowing that fuse untill you fix the problem. I cant think of much else. Hope that helps you ATL.

A little wierd....it cleared up

I had some errands to run and was going to swing by Autozone on the way home, but the dashboard lights all went off by themselves.

I know, everyone is thinking that this must mean there is a short or loose connection somewhere, and the problem will likely return. Could be, but at least I now know that it wasn't a blown fuse:

I'm actualy optimistic that the problem was temporary. When I first installed the navigation unit 3 weeks ago, I had some other minor electrical glitches that simply went away after the truck rested overnight. If the problem pops up, I will tag another message on to this thread just in case anyone is curious.

I also discovered that there is a little more information on the fusebox cover than I originally thought. There are some cryptic descriptions of what the fuses are connected to.

I just got my new 06 SR5 last week (it was a replacement for my 05 lemon). This past weekend I took my 06 to my brother-in-law to get the NAV and XM put back in (he owns a car audio store). Those same lights came on on my truck after installing the NAV in the 06 for the first time. My speed sensor tap didn't work. The instructions I had said there would be 3 purple wires with a red stripe and that I could tap any of the 3. Well, my speed sensor didn't work, so we tapped one of the other wires, didn't work. So, we tapped the last wire and it worked. Disconnected the battery for about an hour to make the lights go away. No problems after that. I figure tapping the wrong wire caused some feedback to the system which caused the lights to come on.

That's interesting. The first time I installed the Nav I was extra cautious and disconnected the negative battery terminal before I opened anything up. The only problem with this was it was dark in my garage and those map lights sure are nice to have on when you're mucking around with the dash. So, this past weekend I left the batter connected and used the interior lights.

I still haven't gotten the external voice speaker to work right, but next time I open her up I think I will disconnect the battery again.
