a lose of power...

if i'm in 2wd and driving through thick sugar sand, i will completely lose power, pedal to the floor and (what feels like) wheels not spinning. if i'm in 4wd no problem. also seems to be worse with the a/c on. any ideas?

Your post is confusing. Are you saying driving through sand in 2WD, you lose power? That's 100% expected. 4WD gives power to all 4 wheels so it doesn't get stuck...

It sounds like he means his truck has no power and is NOT spinning the rear tires, I think.

I see he has an 01 4runner. Don't they have the fancy traction control features? I'm pretty sure I have seen other posts with people complaining about similar loss of oomph when trying to gun it at a slippery intersection.

I have no first hand knowledge but think I remember reading about this.

Yeah if a tire loses traction it transfers to another wheel. So it might literally just sit there since both wheels are losing traction.

I haven't heard anyone say they love the traction system in the 01-02s.

exact reason i was looking for a 99-00 only....when i was looking for a 4runner

old traction control system....the ABS alone on these trucks is terrible

I found that when I put new tires on it and upgraded the brakes (Tundra rotors/calipers) the ABS plays much, much nicer. Have not had it come on once.

yea, its hard to explain. never done it before. even if there's no traction, tires should keep spinning. when this happens, it feels like as if you hit the pedal when the vehicle is off...btw my check engine light along with the vsc off and vsc trac lights are always on.

That's odd. Sounds like its the stability control system cutting in (stability is the one that cuts throttle), but the systems are off per your description. The lights on the dash being on is normal given that you have a check engine light. The VSC off and VSC TRAC lights always come on with any check engine light on the newer runners, that's just a "safety feature" from what I understand.

Do you know what your CEL is for?

the evap code; i've had it on for as long as i owned it, but this problem only started more recently.
