I have a 2006 Toyota 4Runner 2WD V6 164,000 miles. Recent purchase. My question is the A/T temp oil light doesn't come on at start up or at any time for that matter. Should this light work at all? Is there a bulb for it that needs replacement? I read something in the manual that said it doesn't work for 2wds but I may be mistaken?

I will say based on forum research, the light does not get triggered until 270-300 defF. This is pretty high. The Scangauge ii monitors trans temp on 2005+ 4Runners (I believe). I would have it already if they could confirm it monitors mine (2003). Hope this helps. I'll be following for any info to help myself.

My manual states, when first starting that all lights on the dash should come on then go out. The lights coming on is a sign that that system is working.

It doesn't come on when I turn my ignition on. I guess it's just there for when the temp of the trans does get too hot.

Either the bulb is burnt out or your 2wd doesn't have A/T temp warning. When you first put your ignition on, all indicator lights should come on, if they don't, then there a problem.

I would have to say that this light must work regardless to do the transmission fluid check since this is a model that doesn't have a dipstick and is filled with W/S. I guess I will have to mention it to the dealer. Viewing another forum that spoke of changing the cluster lights to white I didn't see any way of changing out the bulbs for those warning lights. I may just buy some wire and cross the terminals to see if it lights up.

I don't know why is would matter if it was 2/4WD. it hasn't lit up since I've had it.

I have a 2003 SR5 2WD and I went went mudding one time and I got my transmission so hot that it started to slip in Drive and Reverse pretty bad. The A/T light never came on at all. But after the transmission cooled down, It hasn't ever slipped again. After that incident, i did a transmission flush and new filter just to be safe. Havent had a single issue ever since, but it sure would have been nice to have that light turn on for me.

Maybe they don't expect 2WD owners to go offload? I dunno but I've gone through mud without getting stuck before. They're still capable in 2WD form.

It worked on my 99 (3rd gen) which had the same A340 automatic, I don't know why it wouldn't work on an 03-04. :shrug:

So on a side note, I went to the dealer to get the rad flushed which they did. Then I asked about trans flush. They said no they would strongly advise against it. Really? They didn't blame the mileage or anything they just said it was unnecessary at all. They however could do a drain and refill. Umm, no. So I found this Japanese auto shop, they said they would do it. Replacing all the fluid, filter screen, and drop the pan to clean the magnets for around 300$. Not a big deal just wanted to see if anyone else thought this was a bad idea?
